Benjamin,
If you have been following the news, you may have heard that same-sex marriage is now legal in almost 20 states. From studying biology and psychology in undergrad, I can’t help but think that close-minded bigoted attitudes result from failure to be raised properly along with some other brain abnormalities.
One can be born with a wide variety of physical or psychological abnormalities. The important question is this: How do we recognize, determine and decide if something within a person is normal or abnormal, a manifestation of healthy or unhealthy? The answer is the intellect.
The intellect is capable of accepting things that are different than oneself and that there is no one definition or predestined structure for any human being. It is not difficult to understand that some men love men, some women love women, some people love both and some people love neither.
It is also not difficult to understand that not everyone with a penis is a man and not everyone with a vagina is a woman. Gender and sex do not always match, nor are they obligated to. As Hendrik Hertzberg once said, “Marriage is between a spouse and a spouse, not a gender and a gender.”
My suggestions to you are 1) instead of bragging about taking a Bio 101 and Psych 105 class in undergrad, try taking a human sexuality class. You might gain some insight, and 2) if you have a problem with gay and lesbian people, hold the straight people accountable. They’re the ones who keep having gay babies.
