Thanksgiving supports factory food horror

Editor,

As we approach the holiday season, I would like to remind everyone whether they are spending the holidays with friends or family that this joyous time is not joyous for everyone. For some it is a nightmare.

I am speaking for the animals that must endure the horrible and abusive treatment of factory farming. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 45 million turkeys are eaten in the United States at Thanksgiving.

Most of these turkeys will be genetically modified to gain weight faster. These birds that can live up to 10 years in the wild are killed when they are just babies at 5 months old. If the meat industries let the birds live one more month, these beautiful birds would die from organ failure or heart attacks because of their unnaturally large size.

Think you’re getting a “humane” turkey? While these turkeys have similar lives, they are killed at the same slaughterhouses as all the other turkeys and they are still transfered with 2,000 other turkeys in the same cramped semis, according to PETA.com.

Instead of participating in this inhumane practice there are other Thanksgiving alternatives, such as Gardin Holiday, Roasts, Field Roast Holiday Roast, Tofurkey or even Vegetarian Plus Ham. All of these tasty animal alternatives can easily be found at Sprouts, the Co-op, Whole Foods and sometimes even Target. They are cheaper or the same price as a turkey. So please take a moment to think about who you are eating instead of what you are eating this Thanksgiving.

To find out more go to PETA2.com. Have a happy, safe and compassionate holiday season.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Baca
