Editor,
Obama said he wants to make community college free. I don’t believe lab fees and books were mentioned, which is the lion’s share of student costs. I’ve been taking classes on and off at TVI (CNM) since the early ‘80s. I wouldn’t attend any more classes at CNM even if they were free.
In the days before President Kathie Winograd at CNM, I enjoyed the classes, and instructors appeared to enjoy teaching. Post-Winograd, the attitude of the instructors has taken a turn for the worse. Many refuse to answer questions even during office hours that may be considered more advanced than the class content.
One instructor threw dry board markers across the room because a student asked a question the instructor didn’t like. I’ve seen an instructor scream at a student. I asked a question in an email to an instructor when classes were closed due to extreme weather. Her reply was, “Google it.” I reported a student who was saying during class he wanted to hurt people. I’ll never go through that bureaucratic mess again. Just to make small talk I’ve asked many instructors how it’s going or when do they plan on retiring. The response is usually a deep breath, or ‘as soon as possible.’
The Board of Governors praise the administration for knowing how long a meeting room is vacant, but look away with one hand on the hip, the back of the other placed on the forehead, and head tilted back when instructors’ morale is mentioned.
I won’t be taking any more classes at CNM. Maybe the money can be put to better use. No: It’ll be spent on administration salaries and take-home cars.
I like to travel. I’d much prefer free airfare and hotel. Add restaurants and souvenirs. New clothing. I gotta have new, free clothing to travel. Don’t forget spending money. I’ve got to have free spending money. Someone has to go with me. I’ve got to have free stuff for them, too. I love America – the land of the free.
Sincerely,
Brian Butcher
