Letter: Slain Muslims should have called police first

Editor,

The unprovoked and opportunistic murder of three young Arab-American college students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina could well have been avoided if the victims had brought in the police earlier. When the white, middle-aged gun nut who eventually executed them had threatened them, and walked up to their door with a gun – had they warned him they had told the police, this could have made him back off.

Instead, we hear about how these Muslims had responded to his behavior with kindness and peace because, as their relatives said, Islam has taught them to be peaceful even with enemies. So he likely saw them as vulnerable and easy targets for one of the many firearms he had accumulated.

Hence a call to innocent minorities oppressed because of the times: Grow up. This is America. Know why the police here are called officers of the peace and how you can work with them preemptively.

Sincerely,

Arun Ahuja
