Letter: Reactions to recent killings could be positive development

Editor,

The recent execution-style killing of three Muslim American students in North Carolina by a man who had posted anti-Islamic and anti-religious messages on social media could hopefully be the catalyst for some positive change in this country.

While some stupid, racist people with low self-esteem have actually praised suspected killer Craig Stephen Hicks on social media for what he did, the overall reaction of many ordinary non-Muslim Americans has been horror and rejection of this cowardly act of terrorism. Average non-Muslim Americans need to understand that the mainstream media has corporate sponsorship which makes money from invading and taking the natural resources of Muslim countries.

Many years ago, there was a tremendous struggle in this country to win the political equality and human rights of African-Americans, Native Americans, Chicanos and other minorities in this country. During that struggle many people were arrested, beaten and some paid for their commitment to the struggle by giving their life for the cause of justice and human rights. Changing our way of thinking may not be easy, but it might ultimately be what is necessary in order to save ourselves from self-destructing as a nation.

Near the end of his of life, human rights activist and Muslim leader Malcolm X started to see that the value system of America had to change in order for us to see one another as fellow human beings first and foremost.

In his letter from Mecca, Malcolm X said that America could benefit from understanding Islam. He said “With racism plaguing America like an incurable cancer, the so-called ‘Christian’ white American heart should be more receptive to a proven solution to such a destructive problem. Perhaps it could be in time to save America from imminent disaster -- the same destruction brought upon Germany by racism that eventually destroyed the Germans themselves.”

Sincerely,

Muhajir Romero
