ISIS discussion was intended to denounce religious violence

Editor,

Has the quality of education in America become so empty and meaningless that a UNM student would actually post an online video claiming the Muslim Student Association was holding a pro-ISIS rally at UNM? I am seriously concerned for the future of my country if a man can actually earn a high school diploma and be accepted at a university while being so woefully inadequate on such a basic level of critical thinking. Let me attempt to disabuse some of my fellow human beings at UNM about the MSA’s alleged support of ISIS.

This panel on ISIS was assembled specifically to publicly denounce and refute the pseudo-religious ideology that ISIS promotes. Why are MSA students being accused of association with criminal activities when they are mainly American citizens who have not broken any laws? The simple fact that a member of the panel may have misspoke and referred to members of ISIS as Muslims should not in any way take our attention away from the fact that the panel was held in order to denounce and to refute the pseudo-religious ideology of ISIS.

It is unfortunate that there are individuals who try to justify their racism and intolerance by hiding behind the shiny labels of “patriot,” “Christian” or “God-fearing.” The man who started this controversy by posting this video and telling media outlets that the Muslim Student Association at UNM supports ISIS is a disgrace to his country, his family and to the religion of Christianity. May God have mercy on this man, because the last time I checked, the Bible’s God does not take too kindly to liars.

Sincerely,

Muhajir Romero
