AD contract extension

Paul Krebs has signed a new four-year contract to remain as Director of Athletics for New Mexico, the Albuquerque Journal reported Thursday.

Krebs is the longest-tenured athletics director in the Mountain West Conference. He will continue
to earn a base salary of
$319,261.80 with other benefits and compensation.

“Entering my 10th year, it’s amazing on a lot of levels,” Krebs told the Journal. “There are times when it seems like it’s been 15, and times when it seems like my wife and I and our family just got here. I love the state and I love living here.”

Men’s basketball

Terrence Rencher has been named as a new assistant coach for the men’s basketball team.

Rencher is a former University of Texas guard who currently resides atop the Longhorns records in points scored (2,306) and is the all-time steals leader (255). He also ranks sixth in assists with 440.

He was drafted 32nd overall in the 1995 NBA, where he played for both the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat. He continued to play professionally in Europe for nine more seasons following his one-year stint in the NBA.

The newly appointed assistant coach began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Saint Louis during the 2008-2009 season before his first stint at Texas State during the 2009-2011 seasons. Rencher then took a position at Tulane in Louisiana before returning to assistant coach in San Marcos, Texas for Texas State.

Rencher said he has not had much of an opportunity to see the current UNM team, but said he already can tell the Lobos will have a lot of depth in the 2015-16 season. He added that he is confident the Lobos will be back fighting for a top seed in the Mountain West without much of a waiting period.

New Mexico finished 58th overall in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings and first in the Mountain West for the fourth straight year.

UNM earned 423.5 points, which was the sixth highest total from a non-Power Five Conference member. UNM athletics director Paul Krebs said in a release that finishing first among the MW schools coincides with its goals in the new 2015-2020 Strategic Plan.

“When you couple the athletic successes on the field with our various academic successes from our MW All-Academic selections to Academic All-Americans to our department GPA being over a 3.2, it’s been another terrific year,” Krebs said.

Other Mountain West schools that earned a top-100 finish in the Learfield standings were San Diego State (63rd), Boise State (64th) and Air Force (77th). Every Mountain West school did receive points toward the Directors’ Cup.

According to its website, the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup “honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s.”

The Lobos’ highest finish came in the 2011-12 season, when they earned 41st place.

Swimming
& Diving

For the 10th straight semester, the New Mexico swimming and diving program earned Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches of America.

The Lobos had a 3.60 GPA in the spring, tied for fourth among all Division I programs. The 3.60 GPA was the highest in program history.

“Our team works very hard both in the pool and in the classroom, and we are very proud of this recognition,” coach Kunio Kono said in a statement.

Teams must have a 3.00 GPA in the spring semester in order to qualify for the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team.
