Album review: Supergroup's first album makes a great first impression

Predicting a band’s debut sound depends on two factors: The band members’ previous presence in the music scene (if any) and the singles released before the album.

The first factor is typically useless for debut bands – unless it involves a supergroup. In the music industry, a supergroup is an act formed by members already famous from other bands.

On Friday supergroup Devil City Angels will be releasing its self-titled debut record.

Tracii Guns (of L.A. Guns), Rikki Rockett (of Poison), Rudy Sarzo (of Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne) and Brandon Gibbs (of The Gibbs Brothers and Cheap Thrill) have come together to produce a catchy and upbeat rock album in “Devil City Angels.”

The band has released two singles from the upcoming release: “All I Need” and “Boneyard.”

“All I Need” is a light-hearted, energetic song declaring awe and happiness to a loved one.

Gibbs’ pleasant vocals are crystal clear and easy to understand, and the high key he sings gives the single a fun energy that makes listeners want to play “All I Need” on repeat.

The music is light and steady, but guitarist Guns makes sure to throw in the occasional mini rock solo to keep the song rock n’ roll.

It’s also the perfect song for anyone making a cheesy mix tape for a significant other. It will definitely be on my next one.

“Boneyard” may fit the expectations of heavy rock fans of the members’ other bands better. With heavy riffs, lyrics about a flirtatious woman and a classic rock beat, this track is your typical feel-good rock song.

Rocket keeps the energy of “Boneyard” high with his steady beats to compliment Gibbs’ harmonies perfectly. One could see this song easily becoming a radio hit on local rock stations.

So far, Devil City Angels has made a great impression of the self-titled album for fans of ‘80s rock bands like L.A. Guns and Quiet Riot. Time will tell if the rest of the record, as well as the supergroup, will meet expectations.
