ASUNM column: ASUNM wants YOU to participate

Lately there has been a lot of talk about student fees.

Somewhere in the breakdown of the fees students pay every semester, YOU are paying a student government fee. If you are a full time student at UNM, every semester you pay ASUNM $20. So why not take advantage of your money? Well, here are the ways you can do just that:

The Finance committee meets biweekly in the Student Union Building in room Lobo B and goes through two major processes. The first, the Appropriation Process, is a continuous one where chartered student organizations may request financial support for a one-time expenditure from ASUNM. Examples of this include travel, conference fees and event supplies. You can request an appropriation this fall EVEN if you already received a budget from us in the spring.

That’s because the second process the committee handles, the Budget Process, is one that provides you with revenue to get you through the year instead of a one-time cost. The Fall Budget Process this semester is well underway, and passing the Full Budget is on the horizon. However, the Appropriation Process is still open until the end of the semester and we encourage YOU and YOUR organization to apply for $$$.

Your student fees also go to put on incredible events open to the student body. Two MAJOR events coming up include:

-Red Rally: (Oct. 1) Red Rally is a widely known ASUNM event -- even recognized nationally, as Sports Illustrated rated it as #55 for “102 Things You Have To Do Before You Graduate.” But don’t wait until Oct. 1 to enjoy the fire, come help us build the 25 ft. Aggie throughout the next couple of weeks.

-Fall Frenzy: (Oct. 2) This is an opportunity for you and your friends to take part in school beautification as we plant trees and flowers and work on many other projects across campus to give our school a quick makeover. Be proud of where you study: Let’s make our campus beautiful and have fun doing it. And also eat. Because eating is great too!

Our Judicial Branch is still accepting applications for Associate Justice. Please contact Chief Justice Joseph Sanchez if you are interested in gaining this experience and becoming a more active participant in the ASUNM family.

This is just a highlight of how money is being spent these next few weeks, but we are always open for suggestions. If there is programming or an event you would like to see on campus, come talk to us about it! We love new ideas.
