Letter: UNM picked a losing mascot in extinct Lobos

Editor,

The Mexican wolf, also known as the lobo, that once roamed New Mexico is extinct. All the University’s depictions of the wolf are stereotypical, non-factual representations showing dramatized or emphasized violent traits. Lots of teeth and scowling. The citizens of New Mexico shot, trapped and poisoned all the wolves to extinction.

Why did our school pick a losing mascot? Why was the wolf, an object of contempt for New Mexicans, made the focus of unity for the University? Shouldn’t our mascot be the chili? It’s used to produce weapons, food and revenue for all New Mexicans and is a winning
source of envy from everyone else.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Oliver

UNM student
