Sports Issue: Fitness tips for the busy student

Life as a student can be busy. With so much time spent going to classes and studying, who has time to work out anymore? However, students’ bodies must be able to support the exercise their minds receive every day. So here are some tips for staying active during a busy student life.

If it’s becoming difficult to stick to scheduled gym time, sign up for one of the many P.E. classes offered. With so many classes to choose from, there is something for everyone. Athletes can take sports classes, people looking to relax can take a yoga class, and those who love to dance can sign up for a dance class. Not only will you have a solid time block devoted to being active, you’ll earn credits while doing it. It’s the perfect way to kill two birds with one stone and make sure you stay on top of your physical health.

Everywhere you look there is someone riding a skateboard to class. How many calories does that burn? Probably not as many as walking. Sure, you have to leave earlier to get to class, but you’ll be able to stretch your legs and burn a few calories during that time. If your classes are just too far apart, another option is biking. Your legs still get the workout while your attendance record stays intact.

Speaking of walking, ever notice how many places on campus have ramps and elevators? It’s great for those who need accessible paths to take them, but if you’re trying to fit exercise into your busy life, try taking the stairs. Even if the ramp is closer to you, walk around to the front and take the stairs. Though it’s a small change, the calories burned over time will make a difference.

No one studies 24/7. Sometimes you just need to put that textbook down and spend some energy for a while. This is the perfect time to go to the gym. For those who live on campus, Johnson Center is free to UNM students and has many time windows available to work with your schedule. Even if you can only afford to spend 30 minutes away from your work, use that time to get your workout in and get your mind off the stressful assignment waiting for you.

If you’re going to a party or going out with friends, go do something active. You can dance at a party or a club, go play a game of basketball at a local park, go rock climbing, or many other fun, active things to get your exercise in while spending time with your friends.
