Letter: UNM already offers great faculty benefits, doesn't need a tuition raise

Editor,

Margaret Gonzales is right: UNM facilitates excellent quality of work life for tenured faculty.

New Mexico’s physical, cultural and technical assets complement our distinguished researchers. Along with compensation for faculty extra duties, UNM is family friendly. UNM tenured faculty enjoy excellent family life: spousal hires, maternity leave for faculty couples so that they can stay home with their new born for a full academic term, paid and unpaid leave to engage in (spousal) professional opportunities.

As for the tuition increase, this may not be the only solution. Student curriculum (per credit) fees are currently used by UNM academic leaders (faculty) to support needs of the department, school or college.

Since course fees are intended to help defray costs specifically associated with certain courses and curriculum fees are intended to help defray costs to support needs of the department, school or college, then tuition which is intended to cover general operating costs should be enough for UNM to cover non-research and non-curriculum/course expenses (Staff). Our provost office is dedicated to finding and securing funding sources so that our faculty truly enjoy quality of work and family life at UNM.

Sincerely,

Mary Thomas
