Letter: The Daily Lobo should be challenging its readers, not pandering to them

Editor,

Perhaps the only thing Justin Davis got right in his opinion piece is that the Daily Lobo seems to be rather preoccupied with vapid stories while ignoring discussion of meaningful sociopolitical, scientific and technological matters.

I will not devote space to excoriating Justin Davis’ opinion piece, as the errors there can be reasonably identified by anyone with a knack for sorting empirical evidence out of the jungle of opinion, belief and myth. It is unfortunate that the Daily Lobo has become a forum for tirelessly pandering to the sports and entertainment culture while carefully avoiding coverage of controversial subjects that may make some readers uncomfortable (challenges to one’s worldview, after all, have a tendency to create a level of discomfort.)

So, what to do about this dismal state of affairs? Let me suggest several topics worthy of serious journalism – the kind of journalism that is a voice for equality, reason and the advancement of the human condition:

Topic #1: Why can you pick up any Daily Lobo issue and read about sports, but not about science – with the same degree of depth and volume?

Topic #2: To what extent does pseudoscience inform the beliefs of the Students for Life organization?

Topic #3: What are the positive and negative impacts of fraternities and sororities on the entirety of the UNM body politic?

Topic #4: Why do you consistently see the names of coaches of UNM sports teams in the Daily Lobo – but never the name of my freaking fantastic honors math professor?

Truth be told, it would certainly be a welcome change to see the Daily Lobo focusing more relentlessly on serious investigative journalism instead of letting the opinion section do all the hard work of bringing meaningful issues to light.

Sincerely,

Livingstone Marmon

Former student
