Editor,
On Wednesday night, ASUNM voted against a resolution that would have made the UNM campus safer by expanding options for self-defense items for students.
I am disappointed that many of the senators do not see the need to improve safety on campus and to allow students their right to protect themselves. Many in ASUNM who voted against it had either voted for or supported last semester’s pro-pepper spray resolution, which was passed unanimously, but couldn’t successfully defend why they would want students to continue to feel unsafe this semester. Student safety is more important than a vote from ASUNM.
The more troubling issue from Wednesday night’s debate is ASUNM Senator Justin Cooper’s dismissive remarks about the three student organizations that co-sponsored the resolution. The student organizations that co-sponsored the resolution have worked tirelessly to improve safety on campus and ensure student rights are protected.
Cooper’s remarks about the membership of these groups are inexcusable and clearly demonstrate that he does not think all students should be represented.
I am calling for Cooper’s resignation for his failure to comply with his oath as an ASUNM Senator, and for mocking students during Wednesday night’s debate over the resolution.
Sincerely,
Ryan Boyle
UNM student
