Column: ASUNM making itself more accesible

As promised, ASUNM has some scholarship updates for the week:

First, we are happy to announce that we had 32 applications for our most recent $1,000 scholarship and those will be awarded shortly. Thank you to everyone who applied and continues to follow our executive team’s tireless efforts both through the Daily Lobo and our social media accounts.

Second, we are calling all ARTISTS on campus! We released a new PabLOBO Picasso Scholarship this past week and are eager to see the creativity pour in. This scholarship is for students who can demonstrate both creativity and an understanding of what it truly means to be a Lobo. Entries can include, but aren’t limited to, photos, performances, art pieces, writings and videos. This scholarship is very near and dear to my heart as ASUNM continues to be a champion for the arts. There will be two winners each awarded $500. To apply or to receive more information, please feel free to come by our office. The applications can be found on both Facebook and in the ASUNM Office on the entry table on the right.

Lastly, ASUNM is having our Full Senate Meeting this week in Hokona Hall. It has been our mission this semester to make ASUNM more accessible beyond the SUB. This is going to be a HUGE meeting for ASUNM for 3 major reasons:

1. We are voting on the budget for the next school year. After multiple weekends of Budget Hearings, our Finance Committee will be proposing the next budget to the Full Senate, which includes every undergraduate student organization’s budget for the next school year. We are talking BIG money here, so if you are interested in seeing where your ASUNM fees are going, please come by.

2. Before our Hokona Meeting at 6 p.m., we will be hosting a Meet and Greet with the senators in Hokona at 5 p.m. There will be food and drinks so please come by and talk to us about any questions or concerns you have. This would also be a great time to talk to current senators about running for office, as ASUNM elections are right around the corner. Plus who can say no to free food and good company?

3. As if the free food and good company weren’t enough, we will also be awarding a $1,000 scholarship at this Meet and Greet as part of our mission to address student financial burdens regarding not only tuition, but living expenses as well. You don’t have to be a resident to apply; every undergraduate student is eligible. This award will take place at the Meet and Greet, as students are encouraged to put together a team and participate in a UNM Trivia Game that we will host at the event. So study up on your UNM trivia and come play! These funds can be used towards meal plans, resident housing and any other expenses you may have in the coming semester.

As always, we are here for you.

Alexandra Cervantes is the 2015-16 ASUNM vice president. She can be reached at asunmvp@unm.edu.
