Letter: University's methods of handling sexual assault inadequate

Editor,

When I saw the Department of Justice’s findings on how UNM has been handling instances of assault on campus, I was sadly not surprised. In case you missed it, UNM’s handlings of reports “fail to comply with federal law”.

What is the school planning to do about this? I’m getting really tired of nearly every month receiving some kind of notification that an assault has happened, only to see it described as a “groping” or “unwanted hugging”.

Does it really take a woman getting punched in the face to call these attacks what they are? They are attacks. Attacks with minimal legal response.

I’ve been at UNM for six years as a graduate student, and I spend a lot of time on campus at all times of the day and evening. I almost never see a security or police presence, but I sure do see a lot of people ticketing cars.

Perhaps our university could invest a little more into patrolling campus for actual criminals, although I realize that doesn’t bring in any revenue.

What’s it going to take? A rape? A murder? Assault and robbery haven’t been enough for the administration to open their eyes. You people need to do something, because faculty and students are getting impatient waiting around for UNM to take this seriously.

The results of the DOJ report indicate just how unacceptable this is, and the administration should be ashamed and embarrassed.

Sincerely,

Melissa Pardi

graduate student
