UNM student-athletes set new highs in the classroom

In two straight semesters, New Mexico athletes have broken GPA records in the classroom. According to a UNM release, the Lobos have broken the record three times in the past five semesters.

The 3.31 mark achieved by student athletes in the spring of 2016 just edged out the then-record 3.30 plateau reached in the fall of 2015.

Three sports set program records the past semester. Along with a Mountain West championship season, baseball put together a 3.26 GPA, the best since the 3.21 mark set in the fall of 2013. Chris DeVito and Alex Estrella both led the pack with their CoSIDA Academic All-American status.

The two programs reaching new heights in the classroom came from softball and the swimming and diving squad. Softball’s previous 3.52 best set in the fall of 2012 was beaten by a 3.57 GPA recorded this past semester. The 3.66 GPA set by the swimming and diving team was the program-high since overcoming the 3.61 average set in the spring of 2014.

New Mexico student-athletes have also had eight consecutive semesters with a GPA of 3.20, 16 of which have been a 3.0 or better.

The men have also set a new GPA record, the 3.13 besting the previous 3.10 record set in the fall of 2015. The men’s program with the highest GPA was men’s skiing with a 3.62 GPA.

The women accumulated a 3.54 GPA led by women’s golf who garnered a 3.86 average as a team. It is the 12th straight semester that the women have recorded at least a 3.4.
