Letter: There are resources out there to help young NM professionals succeed

Editor,

Hi my name is Kyle Laktasic, I was one of the two co-founders of BLACKPIN Inc. which was recently acquired by Innovo Technologies in Irvine, California. About a year and a half ago another UNM Student Jordan Medlock and I decided to start a company based on the idea we could use advance programing techniques to make the “things” around us much more capable than in their current state of not being interconnected.

That being a very broad topic Jordan and I began looking into computer vision and more specifically using computer vision in the coming Internet-Of-Things marketplace. We then identified a major problem in the industry; auto detection software on surveillance cameras triggers an annoyance of false alarms. In technical terms the amount of false positives the user received spoiled the users experience of the product.

Our solution was to use machine learning to train cameras between credible threats and tree branches swaying in the wind, which we did. We were introduced to Innovo Tech in June and after some idea generation between the two of our companies, they made us an acquisition offer which we took. We are now integrating our software into their hardware products as well as planning a public offering.

We believe our story is important as we notice a lot of great talent leaving the state of New Mexico, and would like to emphasize to young professionals coming out of UNM that there are resources to help them achieve their goals in New Mexico. All investments prior to our exit at Innovo Technologies came from sources inside New Mexico. I personally was thinking of leaving before I found this support.

Thanks,

Kyle Laktasic

UNM alum
