Any Albuquerque golfer eager to get out onto the green could soon have a good opportunity to do so, and for a good cause. The 32nd Annual Toby Wright Memorial Golf Tournament of Kids’ Chance of New Mexico is coming to Sandia Golf Club on Sept. 10.
The purpose of the tournament is to raise funds for Kids’ Chance of New Mexico, the state chapter of a national organization that seeks to provide higher education scholarships for the children of workers who have experienced permanent injuries or death due to work-related incidents, according to the organization’s website. Since 2011, Kids’ Chance has raised $1.75 million in scholarship funding for students all over the state, New Mexico Chapter President Brock Carter told the Daily Lobo.
The tournament will follow two rounds of four-player teams in a shotgun start, where every team begins play simultaneously at different holes. Then for each hole, all members of a team will tee off, before picking the best position of the four drives for the entire team to continue play from in a process that repeats until a ball is sunk by a team member.
The tournament will also have a few challenges incorporated into the traditional 18 holes of golf being played, including a “Closest to the Pin” challenge, where golfers will try and get as close as they can to the hole on a par 3. The tournament will also offer a number of raffles throughout the course for players to potentially win prizes while golfing.
“The (tournament) brings our community together for a meaningful day of golf while making a lasting impact on the lives of New Mexico students,” Carter wrote in a press release.
