From April 8 through 12, UNM’s Department of Music will be hosting “Trumpet Week,” a special concert series organized by Professor John Marchiando. Trumpet Week features an array of events featuring UNM students, faculty, and guest trumpeters.
“Trumpet Week was conceived to feature all that the trumpet has become to the Department of Music at UNM,” Marchiando said. “From the guest artists to the students, faculty and alumni of the studio, everything is featured during the week.”
The inspiration was to give the community and students at UNM something that would be a fun event to participate in, but also to bring some visibility to what's being done in the Music Department as a whole, he said.
Marchiando is excited for attendees to see the wide variety of pieces and instruments presented at Trumpet Week.
“There will be a wide range of works featured, each individually chosen by the performers,” Marchiando said. “From solo trumpet, to duos, trios, trumpet and organ, trumpet and electronics, trumpet and guitar — you'll see it all in trumpet week.”
Trumpet week features concerts by guest artists, the current members of the trumpet studios, and the trumpet faculty, he said.
This year the guest artist is Stephen Dunn, a professor at Northern Arizona University. The alumnus artist is Benjamin Hay, a professor at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma, who is also a graduate of UNM.
Dunn performs Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. UNM students perform Monday, April 10, at 6 p.m. Ben Hay plays Thursday April 13 at 7:30 p.m., and the trumpet faculty concert, featuring Professor Jeff Piper, Professor Brynn Marchiando, and John Marchiando, is Friday April 14 at 8 p.m.
All events are in Keller Hall. The Dunn, Hay, and Faculty concerts are ticketed events, but the student concert is free. Ben Hay will also give a free master class on Wednesday, April 12 at 5 p.m. in room B117 in the Center of Fine Arts. That event is free and open to the public.
Marchiando and the Music Department hope to make Trumpet Week an annual event and are excited to take the stage this Saturday.
