James Paul Holloway, previously theUniversity of New Mexico’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, was selected by the University of Toledo as its new president on May 22, according to an announcement from President Garnett Stokes. He’s set to begin his duties in the position on July 15.
Holloway had been in the role of provost since 2019 after he was selected to replace the previous provost, Chaouki Abdallah, after Abdallah left to lead Georgia Tech’s research program the year prior.
In a Weekly Perspective newsletter on June 2, Stokes announced that the senior vice provost for academic affairs, Barbara Rodriguez, will be serving as interim provost until the search for a permanent replacement for Holloway is completed. Rodriguez is set to begin her tenure as interim provost on July 3.
As well as serving as senior vice provost for academic affairs and now interim provost, Rodriquez is a professor of speech and hearing sciences, according to the UNM Office of the Provost.
UNM Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Cinnamon Blair wrote that the search for a permanent provost has not yet begun, but that updates on the university’s progress will be provided on the Executive Search website. The last search for a provost, after Abdallah’s resignation in June of 2018, took nearly 10 months.
Holloway appeared at an ASUNM meeting in late April alongside Stokes, answering questions regarding federal actions targeting research funding, students and faculty lacking permanent legal status, and affirmative action policies.
