Concerning your plan to cut Performance Today out of your programming schedule:
Unbelievably bad idea, for these reasons and others covered elsewhere. I am, however, open to answers to my questions.
- I have told the station on several occasions that music from all over the world, including weird and little-known material, is all by itself a solid reason for KUNM to exist. You have done this well for many years.
- Music—all kinds—is one of the great things humans (and some animals) do, and deserves full pride of place in radio. Radio should be about enrichment through presenting a wide variety of sounds, sound "colors", and textures. From every continent, including Europe and North America.
- Are you actually looking to pry a world-class jewel out of your programming crown, to add more of what there's already more than enough of? More hand-wringing, more muckraking, more preaching to the choir? We need these; but not all day. The right wing liars and rich welfare bums overload and rile up people just fine. We don't want to be like that. We want to spread what's wrong, but ALSO what's right.
- In case some PC element over there is all aghast about Western classical music being the kingdom of White Men, listen closely to PT. Even the most misguided so-called Progressives should note with delight that PT is moving solidly toward featuring composers and conductors who are:
Not dead
Not White
Not men.
- Are you all thinking that even more news and Yak Yak will pull in a lot more listeners than PT? Well, possibly. But we need the whole package of beauty, inspiration, information, and outrage; not a continuous drumbeat of the latter two. You've got that well covered already.
My questions:
- How many people listen to PT?
- How much does it cost?
- Are cost and listenership factors in your proposal?
There's some relevant information missing from your proposal letter.
Regards
JW Madison
