Women’s Hockey: Lobos close out first season with a sweep weekend

The Lobo women’s ice hockey team finished out their first season with a doubleheader win against the Los Alamos Atomics.

UNM left Los Alamos frozen on the ice with a score of 5-1 on Saturday. The next night, Sunday, UNM put up 3 points against Los Alamos’ 1 point. After Sunday night's game ended, the announcer closed out the game with a thank-you to the fans and supporters, along with congratulations to the first of many female athletes who will carve up the ice on the UNM women’s ice hockey team.

Assistant coach Edgar Solis expressed that with this first season, and there is much to reflect on.

“There are a lot of things to say about this season; it's kind of cliché, but if we put in the work, the results will come, and that's what they did,” Solis said. “I can say it's very exciting as a coach, it's even more exciting because you see the determination, the commitment, late practices, traveling for games, low roster numbers, everything that was thrown at our team.”

Kiki Langenwalter, one of two founders of the UNM women's ice hockey team, expressed her happiness for the team as they close out their first season and her hopes for next year.

“I'm happy for the girls that we got one final sweep before the season ended, I'm hoping next year we can all come back stronger, and we've got great plans, and I'm hoping that I will be ready for next year, too,” Langenwalter said.

The women’s team closes out with a sweeping weekend, but this first season is just the start for this team.

“I'm so proud of what the girls have accomplished this year, and of what we've done as a team. I hope we can only go up next year. I'm really happy that we've built this team in a supportive, loving way, where these girls have nothing but respect and love for each other,” Langenwalter said.
