Cops: assault, chicken breast throwing at SRC A UNM student reportedly battered his roommate in the common area of the Student Residence Complex on Feb. 3. According to the UNMPD report, the student threw a shoe and spat on the victim. The student proceeded to throw chicken breasts on the carpet, followed by a bottle of salsa, the report said. The UNMPD officer said he confirmed this when he saw “multiple food and beverage items” on the floor throughout the common room. According to the report, the alleged perpetrator was not present when the officer responded, and the alleged victim told police he did not want to press charges. He said he wanted a report filed so his roommate could be kicked out of the dorm. There was no further information at the time of the report.
$170 book stolen from Bookstore An unknown offender stole a textbook from the UNM Bookstore on Jan. 18. According to the UNMPD report, the man set off the security alarm, but was able to flee from the scene with the $170 textbook. Police were able to obtain photos of the man and the book, and those have been posted throughout the UNM police station. A video had not been obtained at the time of the report, and no further details were provided.
He wanted to get in those pants UNMPD responded to a call about an unknown suspect rummaging through a pair of pants in an office at the UNM natatorium on Jan. 15. According to the report, the owner of the pants’ office mate spotted the suspect.
Cops: Travelstead Hall computers stolen At some point between Dec. 21 and Jan. 1, an unknown suspect entered a locked room in Travelstead Hall and stole UNM property. According to the UNMPD report, UNM staff is still working on the full inventory, but at the time staff members reported a Mac Book and two iMacs missing. Two UNMPD detectives collected fingerprints and took photographs at the scene. No further information was available at the time of the report.

On Dec. 21, UNM filed an appeal with the City Council against a ruling made by Albuquerque’s Zoning Enforcement Office that allowed developers to renovate the Vagabond Inn near Lobo Village. Although the office ruled that developers can renovate the rundown inn into a motel because of its existing zoning code, the University said that would interfere with its plans to put a shopping center in the area.

Laptop reported stolen from George Pearl Hall UNMPD was dispatched to George Pearl Hall on Nov. 6 in response to a theft in the drafting department. According to the police report, UNM student Samuel Escoto left his laptop locked in a desk at 3:15 p.m. that day, and when he returned for it at 4 p.m., he discovered the lock had been pried open and the laptop was stolen. According to the report, people can gain access to the drafting department with a key card, but there are no cameras in the area. The report states that theft has been an ongoing problem in the department, but that not all thefts are reported. Information about the laptop was entered into the National Crime Information Center database and the case in considered closed pending further leads.

Employees report items stolen from office desks On Sept. 14, UNM staff members Claudia Gans and Mandelyne Lara discovered items missing from their offices, which are located next to each other, according to the UNMPD report. Gans told police that two debit cards were missing from her purse, which she had in an unlocked drawer. Lara reported $40 and a book of postage stamps missing from her purse, also kept in an unlocked drawer. Gans said she had seen a “suspicious female” in the hallway near her office, but there were no witnesses to the theft.
Raymond Plotkin was a freshman at UNM in 2009. A native of Texas, he was one of 18 freshmen accepted into the Living and Learning Community for Engineering. He planned to become a nuclear engineer, and he was very happy here. He loved living in Redondo Village and eating at La Posada. He was a friendly young man who liked his roommates and got involved in student engineering clubs and the local Hillel House. He kept in close touch with his parents and older brother in Houston. His mother Elaine said, “Raymond fell in love with UNM. He really connected with his School of Engineering advisers and did very well in school. He made good friends and was having fun. Everything was falling into place for him and the future looked bright.”

Police: Theft results in employee firing at PIT
Editor’s note: This letter is in response to the article “Regent barred from Lobo Village: too much security,” published in the Wednesday issue of the Daily Lobo. The article is about a Board of Regents meeting at which Board President Jack Fortner said he and his wife were unable to visit their daughter at Lobo Village because his wife hadn’t brought her ID.
