Rubbing my itchy eyes and blowing my runny nose after writing my sixth prescription of the day for allergy medicine, I decided it is time for my yearly article on allergies. This is one of those topics that need repeating so at the risk of violating the write-something-new-every-week rule for columnists, here it is again.

Dear Dr. Peg,
How can someone know if they have “clinical bad breath” or halitosis?

I was walking on campus and saw a flier with a grizzly photo. The photo shows two hands bound at the wrists with measuring tape, poised over an empty plate. Above the stark image, the question, “Taking Extreme Measures Toward Food? Below, details of an event for Eating Disorders Awareness week.” As I gazed at the picture, memories rose in my mind, passing through my heart with a pang. Patients with eating disorders are not soon forgotten. I’m going to share two of them with you. Names and identifying details have, of course, been changed.

New Pap Test recommendations
Ladies, this one is for you, and it is good news. You have probably heard of a Pap smear. That is the test for cancer of the cervix, also called a Pap test. It goes along with everyone’s least favorite exam, the pelvic exam. Up until last fall, you were supposed to get a Pap test every year as an adult. But now, hallelujah! The recommendations have changed. As of November 2009, the experts at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have decided you can wait until you are 21 to get your first Pap. After that, you can probably get by with one Pap every two years in your twenties and one every third year in your thirties!

Dear Dr. Peg
I enjoyed your column on balding in the Dec. 8 issue of the Daily Lobo.
At 52 years old, balding has never been a problem for me. I’m actually a hairy beast. Not only do I have plenty of hair on my head, but I’ve got it on my chest, back, arms, legs … everywhere.
As a guy, I’ve never really concerned myself about this issue. However, if I did want to take the energy to be a little easier on the eyes, I wonder, what healthy options could I pursue to minimize all that hair and look more attractive and youthful?

Swine flu is here. It is all over New Mexico, including here at UNM. Have you had it yet? How about your friends and classmates? How many are out today with the flu? I’ll bet there are at least a few, and there will likely be more next week.

Q: I’m often in a position in which I must choose between getting 8 hours of sleep or exercising. Is it healthier to sacrifice sleep in order to make time for a morning workout?

The following questions showed up in the Ask Dr. Peg box in the SHAC lobby. The first is from a man and the second is from a woman:

In polite company, we call it Novel H1N1. It’s the Influenza Formerly Known as Swine Flu. Originally thought to come from pigs, this flu virus is actually a mix of pig, bird and human. Believe it: only a virus could pull off that combination.

It's finals time. What are you doing reading the paper? Shouldn't you be studying? Drop this rag, go buy a candy bar and hit the library.

You deserve a break. You have worked hard all semester. Now it's time to relax. I hope you have scheduled some serious downtime for spring break. Sleep late, play a lot, eat chocolate, rejoice. I also hope you plan to stay healthy and safe over break, whether you travel, stay home or do some of both. Just in case you need them, here are some tips for spring break safety and health.
