Baseball: Lobos overcome slow start to take lead, but ultimately fall to Red Raiders

The University of New Mexico baseball team couldn’t grab a win in Lubbock, Texas against No. 6 Texas Tech on Tuesday afternoon. Instead, the Red Raiders defended home turf and beat the Lobos decisively, 12-4. New Mexico was able to produce a lead in the top of the fourth inning, going up 4-3, but Texas Tech quickly recovered and tacked on a multitude of insurance runs in the latter innings of play. Texas Tech got on the score board first, tallying three runs in the bottom of the second inning, though its offensive production in that time was highlighted by a two RBI double from outfielder Cody Farhat to put the home team up 3-0.

Lobos ready for round 2 against Red Raiders

After an unusual weekend of baseball for the University of New Mexico, the team will head back to Lubbock, Texas for a second time this season to take on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. The Lobos (18-12-1, 11-2-1 Mountain West) participated in what was supposed to be a three-game series at San Jose State this past weekend, but instead found themselves playing two games – with Saturday's game being cancelled due to “inclement weather” a press release read – and Sunday's game ending in a 5-5 tie due to a “drop dead time” rule. In the Lobos’ series opener against San Jose State on Friday, the team lost 2-1, as they left 12 runners stranded on base and couldn't find a way to score more runs. Texas Tech (28-7, 6-3 Big 12) comes into Tuesday's game ranked no. 6 in both D1baseball.com and BaseballAmerica.com’s weekly rankings.

Baseball: Lobos come up empty in California road trip that culminated in a 5-5 tie at San Jose State

The Lobo baseball team had a unique three-game series against San Jose State with an even more unique ending on Sunday afternoon. New Mexico (18-12-1, 11-2-1 MW) lost the first game of the series on Friday by a score of 2-1 after stranding 12 base runners. After Saturday’s game was postponed due to weather, UNM had a chance to salvage a split in the third scheduled game. But San Jose State had other ideas and jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring a run in each of the first two innings.

Baseball: Runs hard to come by on the road, Lobos drop a 2-1 decision to San Jose State

A late inning comeback wasn't in the works for Lobo baseball in game one of a three-game series at San Jose State. Instead, strong pitching from the Spartans’ bullpen stopped the Lobos from gaining control, as New Mexico (18-12, 11-2 Mountain West) fell, 2-1 on Friday night. The loss to San Jose State (12-17, 6-7 Mountain West) is UNM’s second conference loss this season – the first coming against Fresno State – and puts the team at a two-game losing streak. For the Spartans, the win marks their first against the Lobos this season after being swept last month in Albuquerque to start conference play.

Lobos fall to another ranked opponent against San Diego

The Lobo baseball team couldn't capitalize when it had the chance in a single-game matchup at San Diego on Wednesday evening. UNM stranded 14 base runners on its way to a 7-2 loss at Fowler Park. Head coach Ray Birmingham seemed frustrated with how his team performed on offense, especially knowing that his team was in scoring position plenty of times – including two stints where the bases were loaded. “We had a lot of at-bats tonight,” Birmingham said in a press release. “I'm not real pleased about it and it's something we better fix before we start our series at San Jose State on Friday.”

Baseball: Lobos get another chance to beat a top-25 team against San Diego

Wednesday night will boast another tough test for Lobo baseball as the team plays a one-game stint in California against No. 19 San Diego at Fowler Park. New Mexico (18-10, 11-1 MW) enters Wednesday’s game having won seven out of its last nine games. The Lobos earned series wins over conference opponents UNLV and Fresno State as well as a victory over in-state rival New Mexico State. During the stretch, two Lobo wins really stood out above the rest. After losing a sixth straight game, the Lobos showed they had plenty of fight by exploding for 25 hits en route to a 22-3 victory over Grand Canyon on Mar. 22.

Baseball: Jared Mang latest Lobo to take home MW Player of the Week honors

For the fifth time this season, a Lobo baseball player was named Mountain West Player of the Week. This week it was sophomore outfielder Jared Mang who took the reigns. Mang hit .471 last week -- including a weekend series with Fresno State and a game at in-state foe New Mexico State. The healthy batting average was also accompanied by more impressive statistics, including eight runs scored and seven RBI.

Baseball: Lobos sweep Fresno with solid pitching, economical hitting

A solid outing from starting pitcher Luis Gonzalez and a subsequent closing appearance from Carson Schneider was all the Lobos needed to grab a second win in its three-game series with Fresno State. Gonzalez, surrounded by a multitude of pro scouts, put on quite the performance on the mound. He pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and two runs, though he struck out five batters. “I love it,” Gonzalez said in response to going head-to-head with Fresno State’s starting pitcher, Ricky Thomas, who allowed two hits and three runs in six innings on the mound – and who’s also another prospect scouts were looking at. “I love the competition. Anytime you can get a good pitcher out there, it just brings out the best in all of us.

Baseball: Lobos suffer first loss in league play, falling in extra innings to Fresno State

It was a game of pitching on Saturday night as the Lobo baseball team put their undefeated conference record on the line against Fresno State. Both teams held each other to just eight hits in the game, even after playing a few extra innings. The end result did not favor the home team though, as the Lobos fell for the first time in Mountain West play after winning 10 of them to start the season. The 2-1 Bulldog victory over the Lobos put a stop to the streak, as the pitching duel played out on a cold, damp evening at Santa Ana Star Field.

Lobos crush Fresno St in series opener

To say it was cold at Santa Ana Star Field on Friday evening would be an understatement. But, for the Lobos, that didn't seem to matter, as they dismantled Fresno State by a 20 run margin – 24-4. Friday's win marked six straight and a perfect win-loss record in the Mountain West for UNM (17-9, 10-0 MW). Friday's win came on the heels of a well-rounded game both offensively and defensively. The Lobos succeeded in snatching 22 hits on 45 plate appearances. On the mound, UNM held Fresno State to four runs on nine hits.

Baseball: Lobos target 10-0 start to MW play against Fresno State

The losing streak that the Lobo baseball team was stuck in nearly two weeks ago seems a distant memory, as the team returns home riding a five-game winning streak. New Mexico (16-9, 9-0 MW) looked pedestrian at times during the losing streak, especially with the bats going quiet on the road. But with one exception, the games were competitive against some of the top teams in the nation. But the Lobos have been perfect in conference play and will look to extend their conference record to 10-0 as it hosts Fresno State (14-10, 5-4 MW).

Baseball: Lobos down the Aggies 5-3 in 2nd meeting this year

Tuesday night boded well for Lobo baseball. UNM (16-9, 9-0 MW) managed to play an all-around game in Las Cruces on New Mexico State’s home turf, Presley Askew Field, beating the Aggies (14-12) 5-3 to win its fifth straight game and second over its in-state foe this season. The win also brings UNM’s record to 9-2 over NMSU in the past 11 games. But a victory, at least in the early innings, wasn't immediately eminent. After two scoreless innings to start the game, NMSU put runs in its scoreboard first, on two separate RBI doubles to grab ahold of a quick 2-0 lead.

Baseball: Lobos and Aggies renew Rio Grande rivalry

UNM will try and make it 2-0 this year against in-state foe the New Mexico State Aggies in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The two teams previously met on March 7 of this year, where the Lobos (15-9, 9-0 MW) escaped with a 8-2 victory over the Aggies (14-11) in El Paso, Texas. Both the Aggies and UNM have both exhibited streaky play. NMSU has boasted a 5-5 record since the last time the two teams met and are coming off of two-straight losses at UC Santa Barbara. The Lobos are on a four-game winning streak that dates back to a series split over Grand Canyon where UNM beat GCU 22-3 in Albuquerque. UNM has boasted a 7-6 record since the in-state rivals last met. The Lobos earned serie sweeps over San Jose State and UNLV.

Baseball: Lobos off to program-best start in conference play

After sweeping a three-game series against UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada, the University of New Mexico baseball team accomplished a new program record with its latest win. The Lobos (15-9) improved its Mountain West record to a perfect 9-0 start in conference play, beating UNLV (10-16, 5-7 MW) on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Stadium by a score of 7-3, as pitching proved to be the key factor in the game.

Baseball: Lobos continue winning ways with 4-2 victory over UNLV

Unlike Friday evening’s win where the University of New Mexico baseball team beat UNLV  29-8 and racked up 24 hits total, Saturday's matchup with the Rebels took a much different turn. Instead, offense wasn't the key factor in the win. Both strong pitching and well-timed offense is what got the Lobos their second win over UNLV (10-15, 5-6 MW) in the series in Las Vegas, Nevada as UNM (14-9, 8-0 MW) escaped with a 4-2 victory. Johnathon Tripp – who got the start on the mound for the Lobos – had a strong performance on the mound despite allowing nine hits and two runs in seven innings of pitching. However, Tripp struck out seven UNLV batters, too.

Baseball: Lobos crush UNLV 29-8 in road win

The University of New Mexico got back to its hitting ways again on Friday evening at Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. UNM (13-9, 7-0 MW) racked up 24 hits on its way to a 29-8 victory over a veteran UNLV (10-14, 5-5 MW) squad – the most the Lobos have ever scored on the conference foe. And though that's the most runs the Lobos have ever produced against UNLV, it was also a night for the record books, as it was the third most points UNM has ever scored and a season-high thus far. The school record for most runs in a single game is 31.

Baseball: Lobos resume conference play with three-game series against UNLV

After a 22-3 blowout win at Santa Ana Star Field on Wednesday, UNM baseball will look to get back on track in Las Vegas, Nevada, taking on conference foe UNLV. But, even facing a team whose win-loss record is below .500 23 games into the season, Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham said he realizes that a veteran team like UNLV is capable of anything. “UNLV is an older club,” so they're playing pretty well,” Birmingham said. “UNLV beat Fullerton. They've got a good team—they can hit and they can pitch.”

Baseball: Lobos score 22 runs in victory over GCU

Unlike their last game, the Lobos’ bats were more than present on Wednesday afternoon. In a game that saw UNM hit the ball on 25 separate occasions, the Lobos took away their first victory in over a week at Santa Ana Star Field over Grand Canyon, 22-3. Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham said that his hitters were being passive in the previous game on Tuesday. But on Wednesday that wasn’t the case. Every Lobo that took an at-bat was able to muster one hit or more, except for Justin Watari, who subbed in at second base in the latter innings.

Baseball: UNM swept in Fullerton, California, have now lost five straight

New Mexico baseball wrapped up a three-game series against Cal State Fullerton, and each game ended the same way—with the Lobos on the wrong end of a one-run game. The Lobos (11-8, 6-0 MW), dropped all three games to the Titans, extending their overall losing streak to five on the season—the most recent loss, a pitcher’s duel that favored Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, 1-0. In spite of the losses, head coach Ray Birmingham seemed pleased with the way his team competed against the No. 7 team in the country.
