Lobos re-energize for Rebels

Of the UNM men's basketball team's five losses, none was due to a lack of effort like last week's fall to BYU, head coach Steve Alford said. And it won't get any easier for the Lobos this week, as they go on the road to take on Mountain West Conference co-leader UNLV.

UNM gets a 'Star' for energy efficiency

UNM was awarded a 2008 Energy Star for energy efficiency and fuel savings. The Physical Plant Department was awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for producing power and heat with only one fuel source, said Larry Schuster, a utilities engineer in the department.

Candidates are battling for the Democratic nomination, and UNM was part of the battleground Thursday. Former President Bill Clinton spoke to about 500 people at Johnson Gym to campaign for his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York. But he wasn't there just because they've been married for 32 years, he said.

Yoga lovers shed woes, clothes

Scott Lehman said practicing yoga without clothing is a growing trend. He teaches a men's clothing-optional yoga class Tuesdays and nude yoga for men on Fridays. "I tell people that once you've experienced practicing yoga without clothing, you'll never go back to wearing clothing again for yoga," he said.

Coming to America

Illegal immigration is a make-or-break issue for the 2008 campaign in border states like New Mexico. For years, Congress has battled back and forth on the issue. But no senator, president or congressman can understand the importance of the issue better than people who have spent their lives wanting to become citizens, said Monica Schapiro, a 25-year-old from Ecuador.

Staff Report: Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois will speak in Albuquerque on Friday. The event will be at the Albuquerque Convention Center. He will discuss the economic challenges facing New Mexico, the country and his plans if elected president. The event is free and open to the public.

Course fees shouldn't be factor in deciding grades

Editor, Psychology 105 is attended by 2,200 students in nine sections each semester, according to the UNM Public Affairs Department. Along with this course comes an unusual fee of $60, tacked on for the use of WebCT. WebCT is supposed to be a free online program.

Local bluegrass group comes into season

There was a time when the Squash Blossom Boys would play anywhere they could. "We played for a dog party once," guitarist Dustin Orbesen said. "It was at a boutique dog shop. So, there was just a bunch of people with their dogs running around everywhere." Guitarist Kyle Malone said the gig reminded him of the movie "Best in Show.

C&J department recommended for reaccreditation

The journalism and mass communications programs at UNM haven't been accredited for almost six years, but they took a major step toward reaccreditation Wednesday. A team from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications recommended the program be accredited after a three-day review that began Monday, Communications and Journalism chairman John Oetzel said.

Palestinian attacks justify Israel's measures in Gaza

Editor, It seems there is a letter published in the Daily Lobo every day about the Palestinians. Thursday's letter by Amjad Musleh criticized the Israelis for collective punishment of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. Monday's letter by Alaa El Maoued decried the condition of the Gaza Strip residents and accused Israel of terrorism for responding to 150 Qassam rockets fired by Hamas into southern Israel.

by Matthew Chavez Daily Lobo columnist On Jan. 9, the World Health Organization and the Iraqi government released a study that estimates about 150,000 Iraqis died from violence between the beginning of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and June 2006. Controversy over the issue first arose after a 2004 Johns Hopkins University study found 100,000 Iraqis died from causes related to the occupation of Iraq in that timeframe.

Governor requests funds for dental school at UNM

There has never been a dental school in New Mexico. But that can change if Gov. Bill Richardson gets his way. Richardson is asking the Legislature for money to create New Mexico's first dental school at UNM. A dental school could be costly, said Mark Moores, director of the New Mexico Dental Association.
