Editorial: 75 years after Hitler's rise, world still has its perils

On Jan. 30, 1933, the Third Reich came to power in Germany under a combination of circumstances - a wounded national pride that cried for a leader who would avenge Germany's World War I humiliation, a slump in the economy that created a sense of insecurity the Nazis were quick to exploit, and a racial ideology full of promises for the Aryan people and horror for everyone else - particularly the Jews, the gypsies and homosexuals.

TextMe UNM alert service fails to work as promised

Editor, After I woke up at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, I padded into the living room of my parents' home, turned on the TV to a local news program and turned on my laptop and logged on to Unm.edu. Both informed me that the University was on a two-hour delay. Celebrating slightly, I took a shower and made some coffee.

Mike Graczyk was in Denver awaiting a flight to Charlotte when he checked his voice mail. That's when the former goalkeeper for the UNM men's soccer team found out he had been drafted by the Colorado Rapids. "It was actually pretty crazy," Graczyk said. "I was on my way to visit with a team in North Carolina.

Iraq War: An uncertain future

Almost five years, almost 4,000 U.S. casualties, and the fate of the Iraq War will rest with one presidential candidate. Student Caleb Franzoy, who served two terms in Iraq, said the next president needs to win the war or send the troops home. "There is a job to be done over there, and we need to either do it right or quit and get out," he said.

Anti-abortionists a threat to women's right to choose

Editor, I write this in response to Benjamin Sanchez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday. Sanchez argues that justice is the backbone of what he calls "human nature." As I understood it, human nature is defined as those values we have imprinted on us by both society and our genetic makeup.

UNM students must teach arts patrons how to rock

Editor, So, I just got back from "Jazz Jazz Jazz," Eddie Daniels' salute to Benny Goodman with New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in Popejoy Hall. It is my feeling that we need to get more UNM students to similar New Mexico Symphony Orchestra events. If you are waiting to hear how it will help you and make you a better person, honestly, I don't really care.

Perfecting a 'low-brow' art

Collage artist Wayne Berube reads only newspapers and the Bible. "The Bible is certainly a source of inspiration for my pieces," he said. "If I live long enough, I'd love to collage and recreate sections of the Bible. I get so distracted by pop culture - that's the newspaper side.

Each console has its bells and whistles, but it all comes down to the games

Long gone are the days when a video game console only did one thing - play games. The average gamer has many decisions to make when choosing which capabilities they want out of their console. The Wii and the PlayStation 3 have support for Web browsing. The Xbox 360 and the PS3 have support for a number of video and audio codecs, an odd turn for two companies well-entrenched in the digital-rights management game.

Parking pay stations are a hassle, need to be fixed

Editor, It was the second day of school, and as my last class ended, I remembered what I dread most about returning to school: leaving the parking structure. After my ticket read "invalid" at the pay-on-foot station, I was forced - like many of my fellow students - to wait in line for 45 minutes to pay at the booth.

Health care in New Mexico

Health care is a hot-button issue for Americans who feel sick and abandoned by modern medicine. But reforming the medical industry has proved divisive. "We are a very expensive health care system, and our health indicators don't really reflect that we're getting good value for the money that we're spending on our health care system," said Beverly Kloeppel, director of the Student Health Center.

Electing Obama will show U.S. is tolerant, progressive

Editor, The day after the Sept. 11 attacks, headlines around the world read, "We are all Americans." This defining moment united people from all races, nations and creeds in one solidified voice against violence. Regretfully, the U.S. administration, led by President Bush, has since completely and utterly destroyed pro-American sentiments throughout the globe by waging an illegitimate war in Iraq.

Woman's right to choose an inherent freedom in U.S.

Editor, It is not surprising that we, the UNM community, have had to read the opinion of another ignorant individual - more importantly the opinion of another male - on the subject of abortion. I am referring to Benjamin Sanchez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday.
