Group aims to help Third World countries

A school in the region of San Luis La Herredura, El Salvador, is not the most suitable location for children to learn, student Megan Fitzpatrick said. "So, we're going to knock it down and rebuild," she said. "The school houses about 500 students. There are two functional classrooms but no functional toilet."

Vernon Smith Graduate student Philosophy I don't have a problem with it. I think it's positive to expand in that direction. And then you could also say that it's spreading limited resources thinner. I guess I don't really have a strongly formed opinion on the subject right now. Lauren Liwski ...

Using art to challenge cruelty

Art patrons crowded to see vivid statements about animal abuse at Visiones Gallery on Friday. The opening reception for "Quienes Son Los Animales: Altars to Lives Sacrificed for Human Greed" coincided with a Dia de los Muertos celebration at the gallery. The exhibit runs until Nov. 21. Recent court case clarifies intelligent design debate

Editor, I am grateful for the increasingly high tone of the current discussion on evolution and intelligent design in the Daily Lobo. Contrary to the first letter in the series, Charles Darwin did not invent evolution. His thought was preceded by the work of Charles Lyell, a high British church official, who concluded from the geologic record that the world was much older than biblical accounts.

Independent film portrays the beauty of relationships

Editor, It seems the most popular and financially successful movies are often about men who act like juvenile delinquents, who view women solely as sexual objects to be used and tossed away, or some guy having superpowers. In the movies, many people do not work; they trivialize marriage and family; they glorify violence; or they have some ideology they want to clandestinely suggest to the audience.

Motorists endanger bikers by neglecting their rights

Editor, Cyclists do and should continue to have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. The problem is a vast majority of Albuquerque motorists fail to recognize this fact. Five years ago, I gave up my car, and since then, I have commuted exclusively by bicycle.

Events described in Bible extensively documented

Editor, I was deeply insulted by Debbie Cox's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday in which she calls creationist theory an outdated fairy tale. If she is referring to the Bible, then she is completely wrong, because it is one of the most extensively documented books in history.

Spurs are still in position to stay atop their throne

It's basketball season already, and I don't know if I'm prepared to take on the grueling season ahead of us. Luckily, there are a few major subplots that will help the NBA steal some headlines from the NFL in the next few months. Here are a few of the questions I have as the NBA season gets underway.

Center aims to prevent drowsy driving

Driving while you're tired can be just as dangerous as driving drunk, said Nancy Polnaszek, the director of the Sleep Disorder Center. "Of all the (vehicle) accidents that occur in a year here in the United States, 50 percent of them occur with drivers that are 25 years of age or less," she said. "The impact of driving sleep-deprived is the same as driving with a DUI."

Intelligent design has no place in public schools

Editor, After reading all the letters debating intelligent design versus evolution for the past couple of weeks, I want to comment on what I feel is the most pointless argument in favor of intelligent design. It is, to paraphrase, "I can't possibly imagine how all this complexity I see in the world could have come about through random events, and therefore, God did it.
