Sporting events in need of reserved student parking

Editor, It was such a hassle to park at Thursday's Lobo football game against Air Force. When I finally found an open parking spot, a selfish man told me it was taken for his wife. I was infuriated by his selfishness because he had one parking space for his truck and another one reserved for his wife.

Scientific method absent from intelligent design

Editor, I am writing in response to Alex Goldsand's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday. As a student of the biological sciences, I have spent a considerable amount of time devoted to understanding the arguments of intelligent design. The problem with such arguments is that they do not employ the scientific method.

Corporate gifts weaken the integrity of physicians

Editor, Oftentimes within the political landscape, we demonize our leaders for falling prey to the temptation of lobbyists. There is nothing more loathsome than the selling of one's principles in order to accrue campaign dollars. In order to find such abhorrent behavior, one need not go so far as Capitol Hill.

Fair to encourage volunteerism in UNM community

Life can be more problematic than late homework assignments and massive midterms, student Margi Miranda said. "We're college students, and we think we have problems because we can't get our papers done or something," said Miranda, who volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House. "But our problems are nothing compared to what some people are going through."

Smoking ban isn't based on scientific proof of threat

Editor, Smokers may be a minority, but ardent anti-smokers are an even smaller minority. Why their view should determine policy is a mystery. Many nonsmokers have no wish to impose a draconian ban on smoking. Smokers have been driven outside and live with that circumstance.

Creationism needs evidence before it is taught as science

Editor, I'm writing in response to Alex Goldsand's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday concerning creationism - or as the religious right have cleverly called it, intelligent design. Before getting to the science part, I'd like to examine Goldsand's claims about sociology and women's studies courses.

Smoking ban would help those who are trying to quit

Editor, I am a pharmacy student at UNM, and after reading Kristen Woodruff's letter in the Daily Lobo on Thursday regarding smoking on campus, I felt I needed to add a bit. I agree that second-hand smoke can be lethal. Not only do you have to worry about the smoke getting into others' lungs, but there is also the chance - quite big, in fact - that other people are trying to quit smoking.

Liberals are too quick to attack intelligent design

Editor, It seems Dennis Kinzler's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Sept. 17 has ignited yet another ideological struggle between liberals and conservatives on campus. In less than one semester, Daily Lobo readers have been forced to endure fruitless conjecture on the subjects of homosexuality, abortion, the Roman Catholic Studies program and now evolution.
