Former UNM president takes his experiences back to old job

David Harris is satisfied with the legacy he left during his term as acting president of UNM - he's also glad it's over. "I enjoyed my time greatly. It was fun," he said. "I have a greater depth of understanding and appreciation for students, faculty and research staff." Harris will now focus on the job he was hired to do three years ago as the executive vice president for administration.

Schmidly names interim provost

President David Schmidly announced June 4 that Viola Florez will be UNM's interim provost. Florez is the dean of the College of Education. "Viola is very experienced," Schmidly said. "She has been at the University for 10 or 12 years." Schmidly said Florez cares for New Mexicans and the students of UNM.

Program aids graduation rates

Demian Baum would still be a college dropout if it wasn't for a graduation program at UNM. Baum said he was 33 years old and thinking about going back to school when he first heard about Graduation Project, an organization that helps college dropouts get back into school and graduate.

Runner finishes with top accolades at championships

UNM distance runner Jeremy Johnson couldn't have had a better ending to his collegiate track and field career. The senior earned All-American honors in the 10,000 meters after finishing seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 7 in Sacramento, Calif. Head coach Matt Henry said the award is the product of hours of hard work and training.

Editor, As a UNM alumnus, I know that my degree is most valuable when it represents a rigorous and thorough education. Courses that are either too easy, or too poorly taught - whether by graduate students or tenured faculty - undermine the University's reputation.

Big-headed rapper can't back up claims of grandeur

Lil' Wayne is the RenÇ Descartes of hip-hop. Way back in 1641, Descartes argued that God gave him the ability to perceive the truth. Then he argued that because he has a perception of God, and everything he perceives is true, God must exist - a theory using its own conclusion as a premise. This fallacy came to be known as the Cartesian circle and led lots of philosophers to shout at one another and generally contribute nothing to society.

Card debt not worth free food

Free food can leave a bad taste in your mouth if you signed up for a credit card to get it, said Sharla Reinhart of New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union. CitiCards encourages students to sign up for a credit card by offering free food at restaurants near campus.

Supposed UFO crash film may have been footage of weapons testing

On a rolling desert plain, shabby with yellow grass and sagebrush, a large, white, oval-shaped object falls through the sky at an estimated speed of 200 to 300 mph - bouncing and skidding across the desert before exploding into a shower of fiery debris. As if expecting it, a camera captures the entire event - panning smoothly to the left along the course of the crashing object, carefully framing its every motion - and the footage sweeps across the Internet.

Medical facility opens its doors

The Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion opened its doors to patients on June 9. The facility represents a new era in medical care at UNM Hospital, spokesman Sam Giammo said. "We have high technology that we could not put into the old facility," Giammo said. "We have state-of-the-art imaging that we didn't have at the old facility."

Youth sports finds funding

The summer sports program for children of low-income families is getting help from a local foundation and business. UNM kept the National Youth Sports Program afloat in April after federal budget cuts threatened its future. The Gorham Charitable Foundation donated $30,000 to the program.

Family planning programs need government support

Editor, On April 23, Joe Moser from the staff of Rep. Heather Wilson met with members and supporters of Population Connection in her district to discuss the importance of comprehensive sex education and voluntary family planning programs worldwide. I attended the meeting and would like to express my concern to Wilson for not supporting the Responsible Education About Life Act and the Global Democracy Promotion Act.

Going into extra innings: Two players head to MLB

Two UNM baseball players were drafted in the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on June 8. Infielder Jordan Pacheco was picked in the ninth round by the Colorado Rockies and was the 282nd overall pick. Pitcher Bobby LaFromboise was taken in the 14th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 433rd pick.

Lobos falter at championships

The UNM men's golf team ended its season with a 29th-place finish at the NCAA Championships on June 1. The Lobos shot an 11-over-par 291 in the final round and finished with a three-day score of 872. UNM started 26th after the first day of play before falling to 28th after the second round.

Track team doesn't have to look far for top talent

The UNM track and field team will be well-represented at the sport's biggest stage this season. Javelin thrower Katie Coronado, sprinters Ariel Burr and Jarrin Solomon and distance runners Timmie Murphy and Jeremy Johnson will make their first trip to the NCAA Championships, June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.

Shining a light on Thursday night subculture

A reason to go to the Atomic Cantina, aside from drinking, is to check out Tara Zalewsky's series of oil paintings called "Thursday Night Portraits." "Thursday nights is when they do the swing dancing at the Atomic Cantina," Zalewsky said. "They've got these incredible costumes and a variety of personalities. Some I knew well, some I didn't know at all."
