Banning guns on campus is first line of self-defense

Editor, While I'm sure Daniel Martinez had good intentions in his letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo, the one-sided perspective he used rendered practically all of his points void. The main focus of his letter seemed to be that universities deny people the right to defend themselves by banning firearms on campus.

Lives lost abroad just as tragic as ones in Virginia

Editor, We've been reminded in the past days of the failure of American society to control its own weapons of destruction. The loss of 33 lives is certainly tragic, but do the same Americans who cry and pray for those 33 respond likewise to other, greater losses of life? This one act of violence will be in the news for two weeks or more, yet there is barely a passing mention of thousands of innocent Iraqis killed in the civil war we have facilitated.

UNM to examine students' safety

Despite a campuswide e-mail that informed everyone to be "especially vigilant" and report suspicious activities to UNM Police, the University is not vulnerable, said Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the department.

Freshman doesn't waste any time

Freshman Sandra Zmak didn't wait long to make an impact on the UNM women's tennis team. Since joining the team this fall, Zmak has a 21-11 record in singles. She won her first tournament- - the third flight of the San Diego Fall Classic - in San Diego on Nov. 5.

Counseling the Klansmen

Daryl Davis said getting a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe was one of the defining moments of his life. But Davis is no white supremacist. He's an African-American who wrote about the KKK based on interviews with its members.

UNM provides a plethora of programs for minorities

Editor, I read the story in Wednesday's Daily Lobo about UNM's high ranking for Hispanic graduate students with great interest. While this is extremely good news, I was surprised that the article took a decidedly pessimistic view of UNM efforts to identify and correct problem areas for Hispanics.

Online voting rules questioned after ASUNM elections

ASUNM passed election reforms too quickly and didn't set enough guidelines to regulate campaigning in its April election, the chairman of the student government's elections commission said. "With the implementation of online voting, I think that rules governing the campaigners and the campaign workers were missing completely," Nas Manole said.

Shootings can't be blamed on violent games, movies

Editor, This is in response to Jason Darensburg's letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. I thought it was bad enough on the day of the shooting that the news brought on Jack Thompson as a credible expert on school shootings, allowing him to use the tragedy as a soapbox to promote his theory that video games serve as a training ground for future and past school shooters.

ASUNM president Brittany Jaeger puts pins through maroon ribbons in the SUB on Wednesday to support the victims of the Virginia Tech shooting that took place Monday.

Students reach out to VT

UNM students showed support for Virginia Tech on Wednesday by signing a banner in the SUB that reads, "Our Heart Goes Out 2 VT." "The tragedy over there has affected our students," said Tanya Skinner, executive director of the Lobo Spirit Committee. "We're grieving because we are a community here, just like their campus."

Columnist needs to get facts straight about Iran

Editor, I agree with Rachel Fredman's letter on April 6 about factual accuracy. In columnist Scott Darnell's case, his entire April 12 column was libelous and defamatory. The title of the column, "Iran advances global terrorism," is beyond misleading. If Iran allegedly has ties to Hezbollah, that is not global - that just means it could be involved in the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Burlesque is back, and the ladies of Bella Donna Burlesque Review have more than a couple sombrero pasties up their sleeves. "There will be lots of vintage boobies," member Cherry Jubilee said.
