Exercise your right to vote online today

ASUNM's elections will be held online for the first time in the association's history today. The format allows students to vote online from any computer with Internet access using their NetID and password.

Elections commissioner has conflicting interests

Editor, I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in the actions of a current ASUNM senator and elections commissioner. According to the ASUNM Constitution - Article VII, Section 5B - two senators are assigned to the Elections Commission as voting members.

'Grindhouse' pokes fun at its own genre

The term "grind house" refers to seedy movie theaters in the '60s and '70s that showed low-quality B-movies filled with sex, violence and general tastelessness. The Robert Rodriguez-Quentin Tarantino project of the same name is a spoof of and an homage to this lost format.

ASUNM's policies should reflect students' opinions

Editor, The past couple of weeks have seen the most accessible ASUNM election in the six years that I have attended this University. Thanks to multiple forums and the hard work of several of the candidates - notably those on the PAC slate - the students of UNM have had more opportunities to interact with their representatives than ever.

Exhibition showcases absurdist artwork

In the late '70s, there was an organization called Albuquerque United Artists. Harry Morris, Mike Hart and Mark Woody became friends through that art scene, and they've gathered for a joint art exhibition called "Collective Madness," which runs through April 14 at the Yale Art Center.

Board doesn't represent students, misuses fees

Editor, As a concerned student, I believe it is my duty to share with the student body the ways in which student fee money was allocated and spent, and how little students' needs and concerns were addressed in these decisions. In October, I was appointed to the Student Fee Review Board as a graduate student representative.

PlayStation 3 gives Microsoft a run for its money

The war of the consoles, so clear and easily defined in the fall of 2006, has become murky and unpredictable over the course of the winter. The Nintendo Wii is still flying off the shelves at a predictable rate, but surprisingly, the sales of the PlayStation 3 have begun to reach sustainable levels.

ASUNM elections won't result in noticeable change

Editor, Once again, the ASUNM elections are upon us, and soon, we will be forced to run the gauntlet between the SUB and Zimmerman Library. Every year, we're faced with this, and every year, it's the same thing - pretty girls handing out free candy and promises of change at UNM.

Educators should focus on importance of spelling

Editor, I happened to read Henry Kennison's diary in the SUB as part of the New Orleans exhibit to commemorate Hurricane Katrina. In it, he mutilates the English language in a terrible manner, correlating verbs and nouns incorrectly. I prefer not to generalize, but this may imply that the state of Louisiana needs to undergo major educational reform.

ASUNM presidential candidate Ashley Fate, center, explains her goals if elected president while candidates Katryn Fraher, right, and Louis Jeantete listen during a debate Monday in the SUB.

Candidates square off in presidential debate

Candidates vying to be ASUNM president presented their platforms Monday in the SUB Atrium. NMPIRG's student chapter sponsored the debate, and KUNM reporter and producer Danny Hernandez moderated. The elections will be held online Wednesday. Ashley Fate, who is running on the REACH slate, said one of her goals is increasing safety on campus, including putting lights on Johnson Field. "I feel it is a really important initiative because we've been promising to put lights on Johnson Field for as long as I've been here," she said. ASUNM received funding from the Legislature this year to install the lights, after trying to get them for about seven years.

Don't force UNM students to do community service

Editor, Making community service a requirement has its obvious pros and cons. Even though the Service Action Network has the best intentions in mind, it may not be the way to go. While doing community service is something everyone should try, it should not be forced.

University bails out children's program

A UNM program for children of low-income families is no longer in jeopardy after one dean and the University's president found funding to help it survive. The National Youth Sports Program provides sports training for 10- to 15-year-olds, but it lost more than half its funding to federal budget cuts in 2006. The funding was completely cut this year.

SFRB's track record rules out bias to ethnic centers

Editor, The article in Wednesday's Daily Lobo about the Student Fee Review Board proves the fears voiced by some ASUNM senators: "There is a certain bias for the ethnic centers." It is obvious they are the recipients of special treatment, and the proof is in the numbers.
