The Lobo threesome

Waking Ashland The Well Available April 17 We all know about rock 'n' roll, punk rock, grunge rock and indie rock, but is there really such a thing as piano rock? Waking Ashland is, by far, one of the best candidates since Billy Joel to prove that 88 keys and strong vocals can have mass appeal. And ...

Artist's ink murals showcase urban life

Looking at a James Black mural is like walking through a crowded Downtown Albuquerque street. Faces scrawled in black on clean, white walls look at you from a thousand perspectives, each one an improvised portrait of urban life in Albuquerque. Smeared strokes and dripping ink give the exhibition an aesthetic that only a longtime graffiti writer can bring to a gallery.

Violent sequel sets the standard for video games

Every console generation has a game that will forever define how that console will be remembered when it is finally eclipsed by its successor. The original Nintendo had "Super Mario Bros. 3." Super Nintendo had "Chrono Trigger." The PlayStation peaked early with "Final Fantasy VII." And finally, the PlayStation 2 has its defining moment in "God of War II." One might even say "God of War II" is the defining moment of video games overall.

Band mixes Christ with rock

The band Someday proves Christian hardcore isn't clean, wholesome fun. "I'm really sweaty and gross, so that means it was a good show," singer and guitarist Chris Rose said after the band's show Sunday at the Launchpad.

Sens. against online voting aren't fit candidates to run

Editor, Who is unethical? Who will cheat? I have tried to find reasons why some ASUNM senators believe online elections or a polling station at Mesa Vista Hall will increase the probability of unethical campaigning in the next election. The only two senators who voted against online voting are the senators leading two slates of candidates who are fighting to take control of the student government.

Anti-war protesters should pay attention to the facts

Editor, This letter answers Jason Darensburg's question in Friday's Daily Lobo about why anti-war demonstrators are being met with counter-protesters who support our troops and President Bush. The main reason is because we are so tired of the bovine excrement perpetrated by people like Darensburg in this country.

Radio show keeps ear to the streets

Being a hip-hop DJ is about two things. "It's skills and knowledge. It's got nothing to do with your sex or race," Jason "DJ Scientific" Marchiondo said. "All it has to do with is, are you good and have you studied?" Marchiondo spins records on "Street Beat," an uncensored hip-hop radio show on KUNM 89.9. It mostly plays underground hip-hop Fridays from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Club preserves Tolkien's world

If you've ever wondered about the morality potential of orcs, the UNM Hobbit Society is for you. Orcs are mythological beings from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The society is the only place on campus where students can have a lot of fun while discussing Tolkien's work academically, said Zach Watkins, president of the student organization.

Wages raised for students

The minimum wage for student employees will rise from $5.25 per hour to $6.25 starting Saturday. All student employees will receive at least a $1 raise starting July 7. The raise is meant to keep University hourly jobs competitive with others in the city, said Ron Martinez, director of the Student Financial Aid Office.

New coach, new beginning

Lobo players looking for a fresh start after a disappointing season last year have something that might redirect their attention. The hiring of Steve Alford as head coach of the UNM men's basketball team means the Lobos can try to wipe the slate clean from last season's 15-17 record.

Attorney deserved to be fired

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo columnist David Iglesias says his firing as U.S. attorney was politically motivated, and he was threatened and intimidated by phone calls he received from Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson. The Department of Justice is now under fire for not properly outlining the reasons behind the firings of Iglesias and seven other U.

Sports should be about life lessons, not money

Editor, As tuition continues to rise, and students and professors struggle to make ends meet, UNM sees it fit to pay the new men's basketball head coach $975,000 a year. How disgraceful. Where are our priorities? Has anyone checked the salary of UNM professors lately, or the ongoing struggle of our part-time professors who receive few if any benefits? The men's team has produced several players who have no regard for UNM rules or the laws of our society.

Part-time faculty deserve pay raise, more benefits

Editor, I was delighted to read in Thursday's Daily Lobo that part-time faculty are being considered for a raise from the state. But I was dismayed by the attitude of Jamie Koch, president of the Board of Regents. Koch should be embarrassed to state flatly, as he did, that, "We're not increasing salaries for part-time faculty.

Alford to rake in $975,000 a year

If you're wondering how high the expectations are for Steve Alford, look no further than his wallet. Alford, officially introduced as the new UNM men's basketball head coach on Friday, will be making an annual salary of $975,000 - nearly twice the amount of former head coach Ritchie McKay, who was fired Feb. 22. UNM Athletics Director Paul Krebs said Alford's salary is necessary if the Lobos are going to be one of the elite teams in the nation. "We aspire to have a great basketball program," he said. "We aspire to compete with the best. And if you want to compete with the best, you need to pay the best, and that's what we're willing to do."

Those leading Iraq war should send in their kin

Editor, I am so tired of the blatant hypocrisy Americans live with every day. Why is it that all the anti-war demonstrations around the country are now being confronted by counter-protesters supporting the war, shouting slogans like, "Traitors," "You dishonor our dead," or "Support our troops and President Bush.
