Skaters deserve respect from UNM's community

Editor, Perhaps it is the distinct click-clack of a skateboard riding over the seams on a sidewalk that reminds me of childhood summers. Or, perhaps it is the memory of that beat-up skateboard at the door that always meant my brother was home. Or, perhaps it is the surge of pride I felt when my daughter asked for a skateboard for her birthday - a gift I never would have asked for as a little girl.

Lobos plan to finish strong for McKay

If the Lobos needed any motivation for the rest of the season, they may have got it. The announcement of head coach Ritchie McKay's firing came as a surprise to the UNM men's basketball team, and whether it will have a negative effect will be seen on the court.

Schmidly will work hard for UNM; he did for OSU

Jim Enote answers a question after a presentation on cultural mapping in the Willard Reading Room in Zimmerman Library on Wednesday.

Mapping out a rich heritage

The most important thing about a cultural map is not what is on the map, but what is not on the map, said Jim Enote, who did a cultural map for the Zuni tribe. It could be dangerous for maps to include the location of sacred places, Enote said. "If you don't want it to be out there, don't put it on there," he said. "Somebody's going to find a way to exploit it." Cultural maps are a way for American Indians to identify and document places and progress of their tribes, said student Tobias Major, events coordinator for the University Libraries' Indigenous Nations Library Program.

Campus housing doesn't empty trash often enough

Editor, I am a master's student living in on-campus housing - the SRCs, to be specific. My apartment is on the ground floor of a building that houses more than 30 people. For all those folks, we have a total of three not-very-large garbage cans. These are placed right outside my front door.

Media doesn't give enough attention to the real news

Editor, I'm not sure if Joe Buffaloe was being facetious in his rant about the Lewis "Scooter" Libby trial in Wednesday's Daily Lobo, but he seems to be arguing that no one cares about the trial, and that the issues are confusing and unimportant. This could not be farther from the truth.

Filing taxes saves students money

Filling out a tax return might be less fun than taking a midterm. But taking a midterm doesn't save students money. College students can get money back from taxes by taking advantage of educational credits and deductions, said Liz Kennedy, a spokeswoman for Sallie Mae, a student loan company. "Taxes can be very confusing," she said. "A lot of college students are filling out taxes for their first time, or close to it, and they're not thinking about looking for ways to save money. The onus is on the taxpayer to educate themselves."
