First-time directors fail to crank out an original action film

It's hard to find a good action movie these days. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a good action star, for that matter. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor made a concerted effort to revive the genre when they wrote and directed "Crank." Unfortunately, "Crank" doesn't quite measure up. The film is not particularly bad in any one area - it simply fails to shine.

UNM wins twice over weekend

The UNM women's soccer team rolled in the UNLV Adidas Classic to improve its record to 3-1 on the season. The Lobos began the weekend with a 2-1 win over Oakland on Saturday. Senior Kristine Sweat handled the scoring for UNM with two goals.

Tim Garcia, center, gets ready to hit a shot while playing racquetball against UNM employee Tom Root at Johnson Center on Friday. The two have been playing together for six years.

Deaf parking officer excels at racquetball

Tim Garcia has been playing racquetball for 14 years. But for him, it's more than just hitting a rubber ball against a wall. "I don't care about myself being deaf when I'm playing," Garcia said through interpreter Jaime Campbell. "The most important thing is for me to stay happy, and I'm happy when I'm playing racquetball." The 33-year-old Garcia has been a student at UNM for six years, five of which he has spent working as a parking officer for Parking and Transportation Services. Between classes and working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shifts five days a week, Garcia spends the rest of his time running around Court 11 in Johnson Center. Although he'll play with anyone that will take him on, he's not your typical recreational player. He plays at the open-professional level - the highest level of five in a racquetball tournament - in tournaments around the state and has seven first-place trophies to show for it.

Volleyball snags win after four straight losses

The UNM volleyball team ended a four-game losing streak Saturday by defeating Louisiana-Monroe 3-2. The Lobos (2-5) struggled early in the Baylor Clarion Invitational, dropping the first three matches before earning their second win of the season.

Letter: Present generation should be more politically active

Editor, As an avid Daily Lobo reader, it did my radical heart good to see Thursday's installment of the three-part series, "From the Archives." In the early '70s, there were massive anti-war protests throughout the country, even at UNM. Students literally fought hand-to-hand with riot police over the prosecution of the Vietnam War.

Letter: Protests in 1970s violent; involved many nonstudents

Editor, I found the article on nonviolent protests in Thursday's Daily Lobo interesting. I was a student at the time, and the protests were violent. What was even more interesting was the number of nonstudents involved. People arrested at the SUB included street people and high school students.

Letter: UNM falls behind in support of breastfeeding mothers

Editor, Raquel Cordova's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo inspired me because of my similar experience last fall. Though there is no policy requiring it, my department offered to let me use its comprehensive-exam room as a location to pump while I was away from my 6-month-old daughter.

Michigan State's Doug DeMartin, bottom, loses a battle for the ball to Lobo freshman defender Justin Davis during Friday's game in East Lansing, Mich.

Men's soccer gets first win

Finally, the offense showed a sign of life. The No. 3 UNM men's soccer team improved to 1-1-1 after its 3-0 victory over the University of Michigan on Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Letter: Not all problems in U.S. can be blamed on Bush

Editor, In John Steiner's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, he uses four examples of failures that he attributes to the Bush administration: knowledge of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist plans, failure to evacuate people from New Orleans, failure to handle post-Katrina New Orleans properly, and a loss of pensions due to criminal wrongdoing by a number of corporate officers.

Old Town opens to music, dance

Artists will gather in the Old Town Plaza to perform dances and music every Saturday until Oct. 14. They perform music and dances outside of Old Town shops and in the gazebo in the center of the plaza. The program is called Cultural Treasures Day. Lenore Armijo, a guitarist and singer, said the program fits with the traditions of the area. "People came to sell, produce and buy stuff in the market, and musicians played there to be heard, so they could get their break," she said. "And that's what we're doing with our music - perpetuating the old traditions of gathering as a community in the market."

Letter: UNM mothers need place to breastfeed on campus

Editor, I became a new mom last March. Having a daughter has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. There are hundreds of mothers here on campus with infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least the first year.

The Pack is Back...

One day left. One thought lingering - inexperience. The 108th season of UNM football opens Saturday as the Lobos host the Portland State University Vikings at University Stadium. UNM returns just 35 lettermen and is testing a new offense and a slightly different defense, as well as dealing with some changes in the coaching staff.

Letter: Ethical reform needed for Albuquerque schools

Ethics reform should be an important issue in the upcoming election if it meets certain criteria. The idea of ethics reform would have to be in a state of controversy, a vital or unsettled matter, under discussion or in dispute. So, it would seem that ethics reform is an issue.

Letter: Former UNM president lived full, celebrated life

Editor, I was at the memorial service last Saturday when the late Ferrel Heady, former UNM president, was eulogized. It was fitting and proper that the Daily Lobo covered the event in Monday's issue. I am privileged to know Heady and his noble qualities, and thus would like to echo all the other voices of admiration and add a few words of my own.

Letter: Student protests in '70s were violent, not peaceful

Editor, I was a bit surprised to see that a former president of the University believes that UNM was spared the violence that plagued some universities in the late 1960s. I wonder how he could draw that conclusion. The events at the SUB at UNM in 1970 were among the most violent in the nation, probably ranking third in casualties after Kent State and Jackson State Universities.
