The UNM women's tennis team dominated the 46th-ranked Kansas University Jayhawks, 7-0, Sunday, at the Lobo Tennis Club. The Lobos got off to a quick start, taking two of three doubles matches for the point. The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Maja Kovacek and junior Tjasa Suvak battled gamely, but lost 8-5 to Kansas' Courtney Steinbock and Paige Brown.
Staff Report ASUNM, the SouthWest Film Center and Student Special Events will present a one-time screening of "The Two Towns of Jasper" -- a documentary film about the racially motivated murder of a Texas man -- in Keller Hall at 7 p.m., tonight. "The Two Towns of Jasper" tells the story of James Byrd Jr.
I received an interesting e-mail petition the other day, titled "Impeach Bush." In fact, a Web site has actually been created at www.votetoimpeach.org for this online petition. Most people are aware of online petitions -- one just went around earlier this month asking to boycott Vanity Fair and writer letters to the magazine for printing a column that many in the Hispanic community found offensive.
The UNM men's golf team grabbed a share of second place in the John Burns Invitational near Honolulu, Hawaii Feb. 19-21. The team's success was due in part to a top-15 performance from its oldest member, and a top-10 from one of its youngest. The Lobos shot under-par as a team in each of the three rounds, finishing with a 14-under total of 850, tied with the San Diego State University Aztecs, seven shots behind the University of Arizona.

Two UNM electrical engineering students are combining existing technologies with their own concepts in an attempt to create a new way of training medical personnel syringe injection techniques. Daniel Derkacs and Bill Anderson's electrical engineering senior design class project is to write software for a needle simulator device based in virtual reality that someday could be a more effective tool than traditional cadavers.
The Lobos made a statement in their 74-54 victory over the Colorado State University, Saturday. The Rams (14-11, 5-6 MWC) needed to be humbled after beating the top two MWC teams earlier in the week. The Lobos (16-7 6-4 MWC) took it upon themselves to do just that.
Gov. Bill Richardson appointed four new members to the UNM Board of Regents Jan. 23. As regents, the four will help make policy for the University. Andrea Cook, James Koch, Donald Salazar and Maria Griego-Raby attended their first regents meeting Wednesday, and are eager to begin serving their respective terms.

Baseball junior Chris Alexander and senior basketball player Cristal Garcia are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Garcia guided the Lobos to crucial victories over Wyoming and Colorado State this week. On Monday she had a team-high 16 points against UW.

Of course, I also ponder the question, "I wonder if anyone actually reads these?" As an optimist I assume that everyone is reading these columns and becoming highly versed in the comings and goings of their student body.
The Lobos fell short 74-69 to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas after coming back from a 17-point deficit to tie the game with under two minutes left, Saturday. UNM (9-14, 3-7 MWC) managed to tie the game 62-62 in the closing minutes but could not hold on.
The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded the UNM Center for Family and Community Partnerships in the College of Education a $2.3 million grant to begin local efforts to improve language and reading skills in young children, called Project LEER. Project LEER, an acronym for Learners Eager for Early Reading, which is also Spanish for "to read," is an Early Reading First Program.

Due to this desire, Frank and 39 co-sponsors proposed H.R. 685 last week, a bill that would repeal a law barring students with drug convictions from receiving financial aid.
