For more than a quarter century I have been an ardent supporter of the Palestinian cause, of freeing their homeland from Israeli soldiers and colonists and all the brutality and suffering involved in the Occupation. This has not been easy path to tread since most Americans know little about Palestine beyond what they are told by a biased media and elected officials utterly terrified of Zionist money opposing them in their next election.

While the mending of this nation's wounds remains on a touch-and-go basis, a festive audience in Colorado wasted no time in getting down to the business of healing.

In response to those who decry the position that the U.S. may bear some blame for Tuesday's attacks as radically unpatriotic, I must strongly disagree.
Construction worker Joseph Gonzales of Noel Company watches as a loader and a backhoe lift a cement mixer that tipped over at the Hibben Center construction site near Maxwell Museum Wednesday.
New Mexicans know what a Lowrider is. Most have likely seen their elaborate detailing and flashy rims parading Central Avenue. Lowrider art can now be found in one of the National Hispanic Cultural Center's gallery. First I would like to extend my sympathies and condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed in the terrorist attacks last Tuesday. You have the whole country behind you, and I hope in some way that gives you comfort.

I know many of us are tired of discussing, hearing and reading about last week's tragic events. However, I believe the catastrophic loss of life was a wake-up call to American society and to us as human beings. It was a wake-up call because in many ways we let it happen.
As American flags continue popping up in front of houses, restaurants, in car windows and on T-shirts, many UNM students are pondering their patriotism and support of possible retaliation for last week's terrorist attacks.
Obviously, the provocation of Sept. 11 requires a decisive response. If we are thoughtlessly emotional about the method of that response, however, we may end up supporting the terrorists' goals and desires. They are evil, but they are neither cowards or stupid. A huge enemy body count is not the answer.
In an effort to help people understand and deal with last week's terrorist attacks, UNM is sponsoring two forums and an Islamic awareness event on campus today.
It's been more than a week since the terrorist attack, and the full magnitude of what is happening still hasn't sunk into our national consciousness. As the United States begins its revenge, we should reflect on the fact that these terrorists - guerilla fighters of the most cowardly sort - planned and executed this operation over a long period. This was not a sudden decision on their part. They were thinking ahead, looking at the big picture. This small group of fanatics had more foresight than we as a nation have shown in a long time.
The UNM men's tennis team takes the first step this fall toward recapturing what it lost last season - the Mountain West Conference title.
