Retirees face benefit cuts

UNM’s retiree health benefits may face some cuts. Helen Gonzales, vice president of Human Resources, announced in a UNM Today column the creation of a task force that will work to cut health insurance costs. Gonzales didn’t respond to repeated interview requests, but said in her column that UNM’s unfunded liability for retiree health insurance was $131.9 million in 2009, up from $91.3 million in 2007. “Given this increase in costs, UNM needs to reevaluate the retiree health plan,” Gonzales wrote.

Club sells prints to get to St. Louis

The blueprint to leaving a world impression starts in St. Louis — if the UNM Print Club can get there. To do so, the club is hosting a student print sale to fund a trip to the Southern Graphics Council International conference in March. Shaurya Kumar, assistant professor in the printmaking program, said the craft is about creating long-lasting relationships, which students will make at the conference. “Printmaking is a very community-oriented activity,” he said.

Voters weigh in on Bond D failure

Following Bond D’s failure in November, students and faculty are dealing with the aftermath of effects that voters might have overlooked. Student Stav Gold said he didn’t know about the bond, which would have provided $155 million to promote higher education among 31 state colleges and universities. “I didn’t know specifically what Bond D was,” he said.

I am in the process of re-calibrating the nucleus of an atom. Don’t ask me why. I am an English major, but I have reached the point where I have given up on trying to understand the assignments my professors give to me.

Wildcats take down tired team

It is said that revenge is the best medicine. Unfortunately, for the UNM women’s basketball team, red-hot Arizona turned last year’s 81-61 Lobo triumph in Tucson, Ariz., into an 84-60 home loss Tuesday at The Pit. UNM was outshot 51 percent to 28.6 percent.

Banding together to feed the hungry

Contrary to its name, local band Frostbite has warmed hearts for the past four years by putting on benefit concerts for the hungry. Band vocalist Isidro Garcia said he grew up in a poor neighborhood in Albuquerque and alongside impoverished people, and it motivated him to give back now that he’s able to. “I always find it kind of interesting that more people that have been around it (and) that have seen it firsthand tend to give back more often than people that could do it in a more significant way,” he said. The band will put on a show at Launchpad with local musicians and invite people to donate nonperishable food items that will go to Roadrunner Food Bank.
