Head coach says player growth a top priority

Jeremy Fishbein is, and always has been, a knowledgeable soccer coach. His .666 career winning percentage is an indication of that. Fishbein has 87 wins in 125 games coached during his seven years at UNM, including one national championship appearance in 2005.

After season of selfishness, Lobos focus on teamwork

Wine hath drowned more men than the sea. So, too, has overconfidence. All last season, the UNM men’s soccer team battled to maintain humble sobriety — and lost. Liquored up on success — and drunk with talent — the Lobos ever-so-slightly reduced their investment in altruism, instead turning toward selfishness. Understandably: Winning, much like alcohol, makes for insatiable addicts.

Starting a draft would be unfair, encourage conflict

Editor, While I share William Valentine’s frustrations with the unfair treatment that veterans are receiving, I have to disagree with him about the draft being an antidote. First of all, if equitability is one of Valentine’s concerns, the current draft sign-up law is sexually discriminatory against men.

Lobos plan to be in game, not at it

Mike Locksley is an optimist. He doesn’t appear at all worried that the UNM football team is headed for College Station, Texas, this weekend to face Texas A&M, a team that beat the Lobos 28-22 in Albuquerque last year.

Third of budget goes to granny

Facts and figures about the national government’s deficit are often cited, but few understand the burden these shortfalls place on our generation. Whenever a government’s expenses exceed revenue, it makes up the deficit by selling bonds. Businesses suffer when investors buy government debt instead of investing in future productivity, and taxpayers — who pay back the debt plus interest — face an even higher bill. The deficit will be about $1.58 trillion in this fiscal year, according to official projections.

COSAP: No DUI checkpoint list

A campuswide e-mail sent out Aug. 27 gave some students the impression that the Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention would be disclosing the locations of DUI checkpoints. “As a service to everyone, COSAP will be sending you notices of upcoming checkpoints throughout the year,” the e-mail stated. Jill Anne Yeagley, COSAP program manager, said the message was misinterpreted. “The e-mail in question wasn’t a lot different from e-mails we have previously sent to students, so I was surprised that it would be interpreted to mean we were going to provide checkpoint locations,” Yeagley said in a follow-up e-mail the next day.
