Texting-ban bill too heavy-handed

Our fast-paced society appeared seemingly overnight. In a span of only a few years, the world collapsed: Suddenly anyone and anything was attainable on little more than a whim. This explosive, or implosive, societal change wasn’t without its share of growing pains: Internet stalkers, phishing scams, Nigerian princes, Y2K, “I Love You” e-mails, poorly planned software “updates” and countless other problems that appeared over time.

Studio's salsa fires up Albuquerque

Spicing up your Saturday night could be as easy as adding a little salsa — but not the kind you put on chips. This weekend you can move your hips to Latin music at a salsa dance class at Salsa-Baby.com, aka Salsa Baby dance studios, on 3901 Central Ave.

Swine flu outbreaks likely as students return to class

The H1N1 influenza virus hasn’t gone away since last spring’s outbreak, so Student Health and Counseling is reminding students to make efforts to prevent its spread. “The H1N1 virus that we saw emerge in the springtime has been circulating and, besides moving across the world in a pandemic, there have been various outbreaks in the United States all summer long,” said SHAC Director Beverly Kloeppel.

Migrants face hardship at every turn

This summer I looked into someone’s eyes and saw fear, honest fear. I accompanied the UNM Cross-Border Issues Group to Mexico in July. The group, led by Communication & Journalism Professor Richard Schaefer, works primarily in Cuernavaca, Mexico, researching immigration. This year’s research led us to Oaxaca City, Ixtapec, and Acapulco.

Many Lobo linebackers vying to start

No doubt the UNM football team’s linebacking corps is deep, but the jury is still out on whether they’re all game-ready. They’ve had to adapt to a switch from a 3-3-5 defensive scheme to defensive coordinator Doug Mallory’s 4-3 defense, linebackers coach Toby Neinas said. And how many players the Lobos will rotate at linebacker remains to be seen, Neinas said.

Cosmo Tapas brings the sabor to ABQ

Tapas are rare in New Mexico, so if you’ve never tried them now is the perfect time to head to the newly opened Cosmo Tapas on Central Avenue. Good tapas always present a dilemma for me, because if they are good, I’ll probably want more than a tapas-sized portion, and that was exactly the case at Cosmo. The food fits right in with the atmosphere, with mood lighting and live music in the lounge every weekend.
