HR asks faculty for input on long-term health policy

UNM's Human Resources Department is re-evaluating some of the benefits it offers full-time employees, faculty members learned last week. Representatives from Human Resources asked the Faculty Senate's Health and Benefits Committee to examine a long-term-benefits policy that provides health care to employees after they retire.

Painter draws inspiration from Spanish cubism, current events

Self-taught painter Darrin Armijo Wardle's style is a culmination of different periods in Spanish art history, especially cubism, Francisco de Goya's political undertones and the subject of bulls. "Goya's just one of the most incredible artists," Wardle said.

Artist's Avenue

Art studio junior Gabriel Alarid can sometimes be found dragging huge paintings of heads across campus. He also draws faces with black string and gel medium, a move influenced by Jackson Pollock's drip paintings. In 2003, a fire destroyed all his belongings, including his first sketchbook, at his apartment in Denver.

President-elect Barack Obama's previous competitor is now teaming up with him as his secretary of state. It was very nice that Obama asked his rival to work with him. He probably recognized the positive influence she could have on the American people and the added effect that she could have on the female population.

Caldera selected for White House position

Staff Report Former UNM President Louis Caldera will be Barack Obama's director of the White House Military Office, the president-elect announced Tuesday. "Louis has served his country with distinction in uniform and in government, and his pedigree is second-to-none," Obama said in a statement.

If you're looking for an unusual Christmas gift on a college budget, go no farther than ASUNM's Holiday Arts & Crafts fair for handmade gifts. "We're providing students with an affordable way to buy gifts, but we're also promoting the arts at UNM in general, and arts straight across the board," said Zane White, event director and contributing artist.

Schmidly addresses economy in Web cast

President David Schmidly created a video Web cast on Nov. 21, using a new medium in an attempt to address student and faculty concerns about the economic crisis. Schmidly spoke to the UNM community in a 10-minute message without leaving his office. "When I give thanks on Thursday," Schmidly said during the pre-Thanksgiving Web cast, "I'll be thinking of how I love to look through those windows and see the students getting off the bus and heading to class.

Johnson consults students on fee increase

Johnson Center is surveying students to see if they'd pay an extra $3 in student fees to keep the center open late. James Todd, associate director of Recreational Services, said the center has been open an additional two hours on weekdays and weekends for almost a year and a half.

Student Health considers longer hours at cost of higher fees

Student Health and Counseling might extend its hours of operation to accommodate students with later classes and tighter schedules. SHAC surveyed students last month and found that 34 percent said they wanted the center to stay open longer. Beverly Kloeppel, director of SHAC, said students might favor extending the center's hours but that they will have to pay more for the service.

Abortion is perhaps the most dangerous subject in modern conversation. While some say it is a moral gray area, there are others who claim it has no place in today's society. The real question is, Why should the opinions of those who want abortion outlawed make the decision for every person in the nation? In reviewing the average salaries for certain jobs, we determined that the dollars going toward one position could fund a host of others.
