Obama victory a rejection of neoconservative ideology

Editor, Tuesday's election was more than simply a sweeping mandate for massive change in this country. It was a total and resounding rejection of the entire neoconservative ideology. No more will truly patriotic citizens like me have to endure being called un-American for simply disagreeing with an extremist fringe element of the minority party.

The UNM Department of Anthropology is expected to be in the top 20 anthropology programs in the nation, according to its chairman. "Anthropology is one of the strongest programs at UNM," chairman Michael Graves said in an e-mail to the Daily Lobo. "I am hopeful it will continue as such.

Human tripod, fire clown star in vaudevillian freak show

The 999 Eyes Freak Show will blow your mind without making a mess. It's the first vaudevillian freak show to tour in more than 45 years. Samantha X and accordionist Dylan Blackthorn created 999 Eyes four years ago. Based out of Austin, Texas, their first tour featured more than 30 acts and included a zombie rock opera, a puppet show and people hanging from hooks pierced through their flesh.

Culture

'Zack and Miri' hilarious, unrestrained

The world has now seen far more of Jason Mewes than necessary. "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" is the least-restrained Kevin Smith movie ever made. If he had made this in 2001, when he had to cut bits out of the relatively tame "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" to avoid an NC-17 rating, there is no way he could have made this movie without removing so much of the plot as to make it incomprehensible.

Election has changed history, demolished internal barrier

Editor, I had my skepticisms about the way the country would act once in the privacy of the voting booth. This was a long time overdue. The election of Barack Obama has just rewritten our history books. This is the story of America: the underdog. We have constantly fought the barriers and criticisms of countries of the world, and now, within this election, we have demolished a barrier within our own border.

Frolicking with film

Radio producer Debra West likened the Saturday night show "The Director's Cut" to a Thanksgiving meal. "The movie is the turkey of the radio show. Boobs are the cranberry sauce - we talk about those a lot," she said. "Davenport's 'Pick of the Week' would be the pumpkin pie.

Working hard doesn't always pave the way for success

Editor, When I read Paul Rumrill's analogy of Sen. Barack Obama's economic plan in Monday's Opinion section, I was insulted. Rumrill attempts to compare Obama's plan with students in a school, and he essentially compares the upper monetary class to "very good students" who "go to class every day" and "study every night," earning themselves As.

Undergrads at disadvantage without access to cadavers

Editor, Change is coming to UNM. The anatomy and physiology laboratories may no longer have access to human cadavers for the purpose of learning human anatomy. The general assumption is this spring may be the last semester UNM undergraduates will have access to cadavers.

Gay marriage a right despite views of fundamentalists

Editor, Gay marriage is one of the hot topics this election. There are three states this year that have measures to ban gay marriage: California, Florida and Arizona. Currently, 26 states ban gay marriage - a truly sad state of affairs that creates unequal citizenships.

Spending time with others could cure society's problems

Editor, Chivalry is dead. There are no more knights. I no longer see a man or woman who stands up for everything they believe in and remains noble in doing so. Political attack ads vandalize our lives, and they make us see everyone for whatever negatives they bring.

Column: Obama will bring change, peace

Hurricane Katrina, habeas corpus, Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, the Iraq War, the Wall Street fall and the collapse of the real estate market, domestic wiretapping, torture, al-Qaida resurgent in Afghanistan and Pakistan, global warming and the Kyoto Protocol, loss of respect for America worldwide, a widening gap between the rich and the poor - what does the past eight years mean to you? How does it make you feel? These are the questions I asked myself when joining the College Democrats and the campaign to elect Sen.
