The quality of music in 2018 keeps increasing as the year moves along, and April was no exception. Listed below are just some of the highlights that the month of April had to offer.

On the fourth to last stop on his “Are You Ok?” tour, Myles Mills, known by his stage name Skizzy Mars, made a full effort at the Sunshine Theater on May 8th. Although Skizzy Mars appeared at UNM’s 2017 Fiestas, he hasn’t actually been on a proper tour for two years. With the 2018 release of his latest EP “are you OK?,” Skizzy was ready to hit the road once again. In spite of Albuquerque being Skizzy’s 21st show in the span of his two-month tour, it’s not hard to believe that this could’ve been his opening performance. His show was full of bouncy enjoyable tracks, a positive attitude and undying charisma. From stage left to stage right, it was hard to find a moment when he wasn’t moving, dancing or jumping.
When political campaigns end, often so do the candidate’s social media pages. Gus Pedrotty, a University of New Mexico alumnus and former Albuquerque mayoral candidate, did not want this to be the case. He decided to take the following of young people his campaign developed and do something good to give back.
After undergoing a rigorous national selection process, a new dean of the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy has been chosen. Donald Godwin, Ph.D., has been chosen as the new dean. Godwin has been at UNM for 22 years. He began his academic career by completing a bachelor’s in biology at the University of Delaware before going on to attain a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of South Carolina. He then started working at UNM as an assistant professor.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Anderson School of Management’s new building drew a large crowd on May 11 and featured appearances from several senior faculty members. Speakers at the event commended the Anderson School’s accomplishments. At the event was the dean of Anderson School of Management Craig White.
There have been 21 years of hugs, tears, laughter and love. 12 years of soccer practices. Three years of care packages and phone calls to make up for the missed Thanksgiving’s and birthdays. It’s been four years since the last time I had the chance to wish you a happy Mother’s Day in person.
Kathleen Becker was announced as the new CEO of the University of New Mexico Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. The decision was made by chancellor of the Health Sciences Center Dr. Paul Roth and a selection committee
The University of New Mexico Hospital has reached the final stages of selecting a new CEO. Three finalists were named in the search for CEO — Kate Becker, Deborah McGrew and Herbert Buchanan. Each candidate held a town hall on UNM North Campus during the month of April, during which they described their plans for UNM Hospital and answered questions from hospital employees.
The departments of Language, Literacy & Sociocultural Studies and Linguistics at the University of New Mexico held their first of two celebrations in the honor of Regents’ Professor Emerita Veronka (Vera) John-Steiner on April 28 in the Rotunda at the UNM Science & Technology Park. John-Steiner taught for 40 years at the University. She was an internationally recognized scholar, author and teacher, who passed away on December 6, 2017.
Amelia Fasting, a soon-to-be graduate with a dual bachelor’s in political science and international studies, has spent her last two years of college studying at the University of New Mexico. Fasting spent her freshman and sophomore year at Louisiana Tech University, and later transferred to UNM to finish her last years of school. Coming from a military family, Fasting has lived in a variety of places, but said she decided that New Mexico was where she resonated most with home.
People are often warned not to make a decision based on a relationship, but for one graduate, it led her to finding her dream job. Abigayle Goldstein is one of several hundred students graduating this weekend from the University of New Mexico.
The University of New Mexico’s diverse campus community is home to students and staff from all over the world, with 2018 graduate Paola Monarrez being one of them. Monarrez originally came to New Mexico 24 years ago from Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico as an undocumented immigrant. “The most wonderful thing that I found about UNM was the fact that (the University) never discriminated against me for not being a citizen,” she said. Starting at UNM in 2009, before the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was passed, Monarrez said she was very grateful that being undocumented was one of the last things that she had to worry about when pursuing her degree. “I think that being an undocumented person made me feel as if I was incarcerated in my own city.
College can be a challenging time for many students, but first generation college student Vanessa Alvillar saw it as an opportunity to learn more about others, as well as herself. This spring, Alvillar will be completing a major in psychology with a minor in criminology.
College is a place for growth and experience, in addition to learning outside of the classroom. For one particular undergraduate, college has been a journey full of life lessons. Chris Torres, an undergraduate graduating with a degree in chemical and biological engineering, considers himself a “nontraditional” college student.
She has always known she wanted to work with animals — her challenge was realizing that dream. Galen Alsobrook is getting her Bachelor of Sciences in biology from the University of New Mexico this May. She had started with a chemistry minor, but “realized a little too late” that chemistry did not apply to her field of study and dropped it later in her college career.
The love for travel inspired one graduate to dedicate herself to learning what it takes to help her community. Marilyn Caro double-majored in international studies and Spanish. She completed her international studies major with a concentration in culture and arts in global perspective, and she emphasized this concentration on Latin America.
As many people may know, student-athletes often get the benefit of receiving a scholarship to help offset the cost of attending college. They are also asked to perform well in their sport and in the classroom to earn it. Going to school isn’t always easy, and most students will be faced with a myriad of challenges along the way to earning a degree. But Antino Jackson, point guard for the UNM Lobo basketball team this past season, was faced with arguably more than his fair share of adversity on his way to a diploma.
“Midnight Sun” is a teenage romance that just didn’t make quite as well as other recent teenage romance films at the box office, such as “The Fault in Our Stars” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” For those of you who read the book or watched the film “Everything, Everything,” “Midnight Sun” will feel awfully familiar.
