Review: “1989 (TV),” I've been waiting for you

Since the “1989 (TV)” announcement in August, Taylor Swift fans have eagerly awaited her fourth re-recorded album. With only two more to go, excitement builds with every re-release. I was excited to kick off Halloweekend with old bangers like "Style" and "New Romantics," and my Spotify was set up right at release time. One of my favorite things about being in New Mexico is that Taylor releases her albums at 12 a.m. Eastern Time, which is 10 p.m. here. As the sweet and upbeat tunes of “Welcome to New York” filled my room, I knew that Taylor Swift had slayed yet another re-release.

As a first-generation college student from rural New Mexico, this revealed the need for better cultural understanding within ASUNM. My first year at La Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM) marked a profound cultural awakening through the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department. Chicanismo means bridging past, present and future while embracing our heritage and navigating Anglo-centric spaces.

At victims’ request, 2020 Oñate statue shooter will not serve prison time

Baca, 34, is a failed Albuquerque City Council candidate and Trump supporter who brought a concealed handgun to a peaceful protest on June 15, 2020 at the statue depicting Spanish colonizer Juan de Oñate called La Jornada at Tiguex Park in Albuquerque’s Old Town neighborhood.

Opinion: “Bones and All” is disturbingly decadent

Luca Guadagnino’s 2022 film “Bones and All” forges itself a new genre: cannibal romance road trip odyssey. With heavily romantic cinematography, intimate direction and disgustingly real body horror, “Bones and All” is a stomach-churning visual narrative you cannot tear yourself away from. All at once, it manages to be about love, identity and belonging. Oh, and also cannibals. A word to the wise: do not attempt to eat snacks during this movie. The body horror is grotesque and intense, and in case this needs to be said, this movie is graphic.

Women's basketball: Lobos win exhibition game against Adams State

The women's basketball team won their second and final exhibition game 60-45 against the Adams State Grizzlies on Oct. 29. The Lobos took control in the fourth quarter for a win, despite mistakes made throughout the game. The team shot 38.3% from the field, 28% from the three-point line and went 7-14 on free throws. They also gave up 21 turnovers in the game. On offense, they had three players in double digit scoring. Vianè Cumber led the team with 16 points. Aniyah Augmon scored 10 points and earned four rebounds, two assists and two steals but had five turnovers. Nyah Wilson showed out in the second half, scoring all 11 of her points. After the game, Wilson said that the Grizzlies' physicality was good for them because they will learn how to adjust to bad starts in the future.

UNM’s Trailblazers provides a spooky tour of Hodgin Hall

Hodgin Hall is the University of New Mexico’s oldest building on campus. On Oct. 25, UNM Trailblazers – UNM’s student alumni ambassador organization – worked together to create Haunted Night. Before entering the haunted house, visitors are greeted by one of the alumni students with a brief history about the house, and hear whispers of speculation that it may be haunted. “Welcome to Hodgin Hall. Be prepared, for our presence has stirred Irma’s relentless spirit. Proceed with caution, for you are about to embark on a spine-tingling journey,” the tour guides said.

Vice President of Student Affairs addresses ASUNM

The Vice President of Student Affairs, Eric Scott, appeared as a guest speaker at the most recent Associated Students at the University of New Mexico full Senate meeting. Scott addressed ASUNM through a presentation speaking the on Student Affairs’ mission and took more specific questions from senators regarding the Lobo Pantry. Scott brought up the possibility of needs testing for access to the pantry. The Student Affairs mission is, “creating infrastructure so that no matter who you are, and no matter where you’re coming from, you have the opportunity to be successful at the University,” Scott said.

Unclear communication with UNM’s Campus Watch

The University of New Mexico is gradually launching a new program intended to enhance safety through a campus-wide communication channel, but the rollout has not been universally seen by those intended to be involved in the program. Planning for the program titled “Campus Watch” began the first week of the fall semester with a questionnaire sent to UNM building coordinators – staff in charge of overseeing respective buildings on campus – according to Maya Williams, Campus Watch co-chair and Facilities Management Public Information Representative. The questionnaire was meant to gauge interest and recruit volunteer Zone Captains, Williams wrote. Once assigned, Zone Captains will supervise 23 different areas on campus divided by Campus Watch officials.

Loaded assault rifle found near Zimmerman Library

At about 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 23, police responded to a report of a loaded assault rifle in a cactus outside Zimmerman Library, according to a State of New Mexico Uniform Incident Report. Officers took into evidence the Smith & Wesson AR style rifle, along with 15 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition. It is unclear who left the weapon and how long it had been there, according to the report.

OPINION: 2023 men’s basketball conference predictions

Last season, the Lobos were 8-10 in conference play and 22-12 overall. In the Mountain West Preseason Poll, the Lobos were selected to finish third this season. Under Head Coach Richard Pitino and assistant coaches, the University of New Mexico looks promising for the upcoming season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos first exhibition match shows the strong new-blood

The men’s basketball team won their first exhibition match 83-65 this past Thursday against the Colorado State University Pueblo Thunderwolves. The Lobos recently brought on seven new players, including one who only arrived in the country two days prior, and fans got to see the potential of the team. The Lobos won the tip off with new player Nelly Junior Joseph getting the ball. Joseph was one of three new players in the starting line up for the Lobos, alongside Mustapha Amzil and Jemarl Baker Jr. The first half was rough for the Lobos.

REVIEW: Shinedown brings a flying piano to Isleta Amphitheater

Isleta Amphitheater’s season came to a close on the evening of Oct. 18 with an incredibly rockin’ show. Shinedown was the forerunner for “The Revolutions Live Tour,” bringing with them Spiritbox and Papa Roach. All of them cranked their amps up to 11. Each band put on an exceptional performance alongside the music — with an array of psychedelic backdrops, interactive lighting and pyrotechnics that made the ground jump.

OPINION: Albuquerque's Haunted Attractions

Every city has their extensive lore, whether it be exclusive to long-time residents or made available to the world through legend. New Mexico is recognized as an especially haunted state, according to the Travel Channel. It is home to many ghost towns that have gained popularity with paranormal investigators nationwide, but Albuquerque also has a fascinating history of paranormal curiosities for residents and visitors to discover. There are two locations in Albuquerque’s Historic Old Town that are rumored – or in some cases, adamantly believed – to be haunted.

Lobos end conference losing streak during homecoming game

At the Homecoming game, University of New Mexico defeats the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 35-14. The Lobos end their 14 game losing streak in conference play and earn their first conference win at home since 2017. The Lobos also improved to a 3-4 record and are 1-2 in conference play. The team played a complete game – showing out on offense, defense and special teams.

Lobo men’s basketball has seven new faces ready to play

The University of New Mexico has added seven new players to the men’s basketball roster this year, alongside a contract extension to men’s basketball Head Coach Richard Pitino until the 2027-28 season. Pitino has helped the Lobos achieve a 20-win season last year – the best since 2014 – and a postseason appearance. Last year, the Lobos finished with a 8-10 record within the Mountain West conference, making it two games in the MW Tournament before losing to Utah State. UNM has signed three guards, three forwards and one center. This leaves half of the roster remaining from last season.

Eight bonds on the ballot for city maintenance

On this year's ballot, there are a total of seven municipal General Obligation Bond questions alongside one college bond question. If any of the G.O. Bonds are passed, money from the city's property tax revenue will be put toward that particular set of capital improvement projects or city maintenance. The approval of bonds will not cause property taxes to increase, however if a bond is not passed, it could cause a small decrease in property taxes with a $3.80 decrease a month for a home valued at $150,000. The team at the Daily Lobo has broken down what these bonds mean to give voters context on the projects at hand as they step into the voting booths this November.

District 2 candidate guide

With City Council elections around the corner, incumbent Isaac Benton will not be running for re-election and District 2 will welcome a new councilor to assume the role. District 2 is the City Center district. It includes Downtown, Old Town, and the valley east of the Rio Grande. District 2 also holds the highest number of homeless shelters of any other district in Albuquerque, according to a map released by The Family and Community Services Department. A common issue all three candidates share as a focus of their campaigns is how to address the size of the unhoused population in the City.

Uncontested flood control election

This year's Flood Control District 5 director election is uncontested with incumbent Bruce Thomson on the ballot unopposed. The Flood Control Board of Directors is a political body in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority that is elected for six-year terms to work and set budgets for flood control projects in the City.

Soil & Water supervisor board election

This upcoming election, three of the five elected positions on the Ciudad Soil and Water District Supervisor Board are up for election. Of them, two are landowner positions – meaning you must own land in the district – and one is an at-large position. There are several soil and water conservation districts (SWCD) across the state. The SWCD are volunteer positions and the board is responsible for the control and prevention of soil erosion, flood water damage, promoting conservation and water recreation, according to the Act creating the districts. The board sits under both the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the National Resource Conservation Service, which is positioned under the federal U.S. Department of Agriculture – providing perspective to both state and federal matters.
