In a text message sent to UNM students, staff and faculty, shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, the University warned of a "man with a gun" at the intersection of Yale Boulevard and Central Avenue with a white polo, dark pants and blue backpack. The text advises individuals in the area to shelter where they are. This is a developing story.
Time management is a huge part of a college student’s life. Balancing classes, homework, studying, a social life and money can be stressful. Many college students have jobs to pay for their own tuition and housing. With time being such a huge factor in their lives, working close to the University is ideal.
What did you wish you knew when you were a freshman?
UNM has a long tradition of events that every freshman should take advantage of during the school year. These events range from burning a 12-foot Aggie to an all day concert at Johnson Field.
The mission of the UNM Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is to support and encourage all students to pursue academic excellence within and throughout the University’s diverse community, said the office’s director Dr. Elisio “Cheo” Torres. The OSA establishes partnerships, programs, facilities, service, and leadership, he said.
Social Security isn’t something UNM students think about often, but it's vital to their future and in danger of being cut. DeAnza Valencia-Sapien, associate state director of advocacy at AARP, said if no congressional action is taken, Social Security benefits will have to be cut by 25 percent after 2034.
There are countless memes about broke college students, but there are also countless perks that many students are not aware of. The LoboPerks program is a partnership between the UNM community and businesses at local and national levels. The purpose of the program is to acquire discounts for individuals connected to the University.
UNM has several graduate-level curriculums housed on main and north campus. The toughest to get into? The Psychology Department’s, which has accepted class sizes between 12 and 15 in recent years. Last year, the number was 15, out of 245 total applicants, according to Rikk Murphy, graduate program coordinator for the Psychology Department at UNM, which specializes primarily in clinical treatment.
As an incoming freshman, there are some things to know about being on campus. UNM is in the center of the city and there are some issues which come with that, specifically with crime, which isn't exactly rare in the area. According to UNM Police, since the start of January there have been at least 58 incidents of burglary, 99 cases of larceny and 41 incidents of battery.
Senior family studies major Khiara Sumone Loera didn’t come to class with a just notebook and a pen, but also with her 2-year-old daughter Illiana. Loera will be graduating this spring after taking her daughter to most of her classes as an undergrad.
Despite being denied an official place on the agenda for last Thursday afternoon’s Board of Regents Academic/Student Affairs and Research subcommittee meeting in Scholes Hall, proponents of the movement to abolish UNM's seal were in attendance. Gonzalo Correa-Kemish, a senior mechanical engineering major and motocross enthusiast, said motor sports have always been his passion. Katrina Davidson-Shea, a U.S. Air Force veteran and mother who is expecting her fourth child in October, will graduate with a degree in English and history and a sterling 4.0 GPA this week. Davidson-Shea said after originally deciding to minor in history, the decision to pursue a double major seemed practical since it would require the same amount of work.
Maria Mendez tries to remember July 10, 2012 not as the day that her world stopped, but as a marker to keep going. That’s what her father would have wanted, Mendez said. “My dad, I don’t know, he was tired ... and that’s when he shot himself,” Mendez said. “It turned my entire family’s lives for a whirlwind. The solution? Batman. Nikole Couleur has been a student teacher at Bandelier Elementary School for three semesters. During this time, the UNM senior has worked hard to engage kids and make learning fun for them. To do that, she worked to figure out what each child's individual passion is.
Francisco Cuellar will graduate this spring with a degree in psychology despite insurmountable odds. Born in Albuquerque, the father of three has been hit by a car, served a lengthy stay in prison and been shot in the head.
