Besides choosing the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico’s president, undergraduate students will get to elect a vice president today. Voters will also be able to select 10 of 35 senatorial candidates from three different slates.

More than 100 people submitted public comments with respect to the Albuquerque Police Department at an Albuquerque City Council meeting Monday evening.Many of those who attended the meeting were there to protest what they consider to be excessive use of force by APD.

NM Legislature approves recreation funds

UNM students living in the residence halls could expect enhanced recreation amenities by the fall semester. The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico is in the process of finding a contractor to renovate the northern segment of Johnson Field that borders Casas del Rio and Coronado Hall.

Protesters insist on peaceful rally

Protesters gathered Friday evening for another round of demonstration against the Albuquerque Police Department. Though the 12-hour APD protest on March 30 ended in tear gas, this time the protesters dispersed peacefully.

UNMH fiscally in the red

Proceeding into the fiscal year, the UNM Health System continues to face financial losses, a UNMH official said. At a UNM Hospital Board of Directors meeting Friday, UNM Hospital CEO Steve McKernan said that so far in fiscal year 2014, the UNM Health System is experiencing a net loss of about 6 million dollars.

After several recent rounds of protests against the Albuquerque Police Department, supporters have rallied to back the city’s police. Albuquerque residents on Sunday gathered in front of the APD headquarters to defend the department and to dispute protesters’ claims that the department is particularly violent.

Police shoot a flash bang and order James Boyd to drop to the ground. Boyd turns away from officers, a knife in each hand. They fire at him. He hits the ground. Officers shout “Drop the knife.” They fire bean-bag rounds at him, and then let loose a K-9 officer.

Vigil held for James Boyd

Eyrie Brian Faulkner stood at the foot of Copper Trail Head on Wednesday evening and watched as more than 100 people ascended to the scene where James Boyd had been shot. Faulkner had known Boyd, but wounds in his hip and knee prevented him from climbing the hill.

On March 24, UNMPD was dispatched to the Centennial Engineering Center in reference to a report made about an unknown suspect who tipped a motorcycle on its side. According to the report, the red Honda Shadow exhibited damage to its right handlebar, pipes and fuel filter.

APD’s critics convene to hash out demands

As protests against the Albuquerque Police Department subsided Monday, protesters came up with three demands for police. At a community forum held at the Albuquerque Peace and Justice Center on Monday night, more than 50 APD protesters voted to declare their concrete demands against the department’s excessive use of violence in the city.
