New Subway Café will be first in New Mexico

A new Subway Café opening on Central Avenue will offer more to customers than the standard sandwich. Lethy Bernal, owner of the café, said the new business, which is planned to open Wednesday, will be a traditional Subway, but it will include a full coffee bar.

Man killed firing at SWAT

The Albuquerque Police Department said it deployed a SWAT team to the scene of Armand Martin’s shooting death because he refused to leave the house and posed a danger to others. An APD officer shot and killed Martin on Saturday evening after Martin barricaded himself inside his house.

University begins hunt for new HR VP

UNM is conducting a nation-wide search for a new vice president for human resources. Search coordinator Lisa Marbury said the search committee recently approved the advertisement and position profile and will advertise the position for one month before beginning the selection process.

A new student organization aims to build connections between entrepreneurs and innovators across campus. The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization club hosted its first event Thursday night. At the event, the group introduced entrepreneurs to the events’ attendees.

Groups advocate for rape victims

Sexual Assault Awareness month is over, but some UNM organizations continue their work to prevent assault on campus. Shaya Rogers, a member of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, said her organization, along with the Women’s Resource Center and other entities on campus, hosted several events to raise awareness of sexual assault throughout April.

ASUNM agrees on divestment

The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico resolved their stance on University divestment at a senate meeting Wednesday night. Resolution 16S calls for the creation of a permanent committee at UNM to review, evaluate and monitor issues related to socially responsible investments.

There will be a meeting to promote a “Start by Believing” campaign at UNM today to combat sexual assaults. Shaya Rogers, a member of the Feminist Leadership Majority Alliance, said students can take pictures with a sign that says “…when someone tells me they were sexually assaulted, I start by believing.”

On April 21, UNM Police Department was dispatched to Q Lot in reference to a burglary. According to the report, the victim alleged that he parked his car sometime in the morning, and returned later that evening to find his vehicle burglarized.

Students take first in DECA competition

Two UNM students took home first place in an international advertising competition last week. Josh Dolin, a senior strategic communications major, and Sydney Sivils, a senior marketing and operations management major, won first place in the Advertising Campaign category of the DECA International Career Development Conference in Washington D.C.,

Student Cabinet proposed amid fee review furor

UNM President Robert Frank is forming a new student group in an attempt to increase inclusiveness at the University. A statement released by the president’s office stated that the group, to be called the Student Cabinet, is intended to serve as another avenue for students to participate in University affairs.

Student leaders oppose UNM president’s fee policy

UNM student leaders continue to urge President Robert Frank to reverse his decision to exempt the Athletics Department and University Libraries from the student fee allocation process. The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico and the Graduate and Professional Student Association hosted a press conference Friday regarding the change.
