Students reflect on Sunday night’s protest

Groups in protest of the Albuquerque Police Department organized two follow-up demonstrations Monday at UNM. Several organizations promoted the events by way of social media. One protest was scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. on Central Avenue in front of a Denny’s next to Columbia Drive.

GPSA seeks budget boost

UNM’s Graduate and Professional Student Association experienced an increase in expenses this year. Melissa Berghmans, a member of the GPSA Legislative Finance Committee, said requests far exceeded the student association’s budget.

Hundreds of Albuquerque residents united Saturday morning to commemorate the life of a hero of workers’ rights. The March for Justice, which began at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, was a part of the center’s 21st annual César Chávez day.

Regents refuse tuition increase

UNM’s Board of Regents on Friday approved a zero-percent increase in undergraduate tuition and student fees for the next school year. The regents passed the motion unanimously at a meeting in the Student Union Building that afternoon.

Protesters return to the streets against Albuquerque police

Protesters flooded Central Avenue on Sunday after the online group Anonymous called on the city’s residents to protest the Albuquerque Police Department after the shooting of a homeless man. Hundreds gathered in front of APD’s headquarters downtown after Anonymous posted a video press release on YouTube Wednesday urging residents to protest police violence in the city.

UNM law program among top in nation

Only eight clinical law programs in the nation can claim to be better than the clinical education program at the UNM School of Law, according to a recent U.S. News and World Report ranking. The University tops the 193 other law schools in the United States that were ranked by the survey. UNM jumped two spots from its 2013 ranking.

City bus involved in accident on Central Avenue

ABQ Ride bus No. 706 was caught in a collision on the intersection of Central and Yale with a black Honda Accord at 12:54 p.m. Thursday. One bus rider was taken away from the scene by ambulance and another passenger said he felt shaken up to the point of an asthmatic attack. The car was dented and a bus rider’s bicycle was destroyed. California Sen. Leland Yee was arrested Wednesday after a series of raids by officials to crack down on public corruption, according to the Los Angeles Times. Also arrested was Raymond Chow, a San Francisco criminal known as “Shrimp Boy.”

Office of Equal Opportunity now under UNM law office

UNM President Robert Frank shifted oversight of the Office of Equal Opportunity from Academic Affairs to University Counsel early last month. Frank said he decided to move the OEO out of Academic Affairs because Provost Chaouki Abdallah was concerned that the office in its current location does not serve UNM’s north and south campuses.

Racist symbol carved in door

Police are investigating an incident in the Santa Clara dormitory in which someone carved a swastika on a resident’s door over spring break. According to the report from the UNM Police Department, the resident of the vandalized room discovered the offensive icon on Sunday upon returning to the dorm from spring break. He had left the dorm on March 14.

Dance to fund Children’s Hospital

UNM students on Saturday will party for 13.1 hours straight to benefit sick kids. LoboTHON will host the University’s first ever LoboTHON Dance Marathon event on Saturday in the Johnson Recreational Center, with the goal of raising $14,000 for UNM Children’s Hospital.

Protesters rally at Albuquerque Police and Sheriff's Dept.

Seven pairs of hands held up a black plywood coffin Tuesday night at the intersection of Central Avenue and First Street. The coffin had a white wooden cross on its top cover. One of its sides was covered with amateur, almost blurry home photos of various men. Another side read “APD KILLED US” in blue marker.
