Crime spikes in South Lot area

The UNM Police Department has boosted patrol at south campus parking lots to combat theft in the area. UNMPD public information officer Tim Stump said the department is warning the public of an increase in criminal activity in the area.

Lobo Village assault

The UNM Police Department on Friday arrested a woman who threatened to shoot a Lobo Village security officer after a heated argument. Amber McDonald, wife of Kenneth McDonald, who is also a Lobo Village security officer, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly pulling a handgun on a female officer.

Women's health center relocates

After UNM announced last week a planned relocation of its Center for Reproductive Health, anti-abortion activists continue to protest the facility. On Tuesday, the University announced that the center, currently located at 1701 Moon NE, will move to 2301 Yale SE.

Chief of staff charged with strategic plan

After a month-long internal search, UNM President Robert Frank’s office has found a new chief of staff. Frank appointed Amy Wohlert to the position on March 12. Wohlert, who holds a doctorate in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University



Albuquerque Fire Department firefighters respond to a fire at Lambda Chi Alpha, a closed fraternity on 1805 Sigma Chi Road, on Wednesday morning. The department received a call at 9:33 a.m. saying that smoke was going out of a window of a house, according to an Albuquerque Police Department officer on-scene. The fire was contained in one room and no injuries were reported. The cause is currently under investigation. The street between University Boulevard and Yale Boulevard remained closed until 11 a.m.

UNM Crime briefs

On March 6, UNMPD dispatched an officer to the area around the A and R Lots to assist a detective in identifying a woman loitering around vehicles. According to the report, the responding officer identified the woman and determined through a National Crime Information Center check that she had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for her arrest.

Queer-Straight Alliance Advocacy Chair Johny Golightly said that universal restrooms on campus are a basic student right. “When we’re using the bathroom, we’re really vulnerable,” he said. “We should all be free to pee. We should have this safe space where we could relieve ourselves.

Regents considering new tuition policies

The UNM Board of Regents will hear about a potential new tuition model today that could help students dodge tuition increases. In an email sent to the Daily Lobo, Regent Bradley Hosmer said the UNM Board of Regents requested a guaranteed tuition model so students can pay a slightly higher, guaranteed amount for tuition each year.
