Immigration film draws protest

Protesters rallied at the Student Union Building on Monday night in response to a movie that deemed undocumented immigration “illegal.” The film, titled “They Came to America: The Cost of Illegal Immigration,” led to the protest because of its title and its depiction of undocumented immigrants.

Student organizations at UNM are pushing for a new wellness center on campus. Students, staff and community members looked at nine potential amenities packages Monday at the Student Union Building for the planned wellness center and voted on which they most wanted.

UNM investments in fossil fuel companies criticized

Members of 350.org New Mexico are once again calling for UNM to drop its investments in fossil fuel companies. State group 350 NM was one of several participants with that goal in mind at a meeting held at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, along with UNM students and community members.

Required flu shots at UNM Hospital draw complaint

UNM Hospital employees have filed a complaint against UNMH administration about its decision to make flu vaccines mandatory for all staff. On Thursday, UNMH union members released their “Prohibitive Practices Complaint” against the hospital in order to negotiate the terms of the mandate and how employees will be affected.

Nine honored with diversity awards

UNM celebrated its guardians of diversity in Student Union Building ballrooms Friday morning. In the fourth annual Presidential Luminaria Awards, University administrators recognized students, faculty, staff and organizations who exemplify equity and inclusion on campus. Nine awardees got one of the coveted trophies.

Doctor supports abortion ban

A former abortionist came to Albuquerque Friday night to talk about the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance. Anthony Levatino, a former abortionist who practices gynecology in Las Cruces, encouraged anti-abortion activists to campaign in favor of the initiative at Glory Fellowship Hall.

GOP film criticizes immigration

The UNM Conservative Republicans has found a film to back up their stance on undocumented immigration. The group will host a screening of the movie titled “They Come to America: The Cost of Illegal Immigration” in the Student Union Building today. The movie is directed by Dennis Michael Lynch.

Groups rally for, against ban

Student organizations across UNM are mobilizing to help spread the word on the proposed abortion ban which Albuquerque voters will decide on in less than two weeks. Shaya Rogers, a member of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, a pro-abortion rights group on campus, said her organization started to advocate against the measure about a month ago.

International Week kicks off Monday

UNM students can go global next week. The University’s Global Education Offices, with the help of various other organizations, will launch this year’s International Education Week on Monday. Danielle Gilliam, administrative officer for GEO, said this year’s international week will be a big one.

Absentee voting for undergraduate senator spots begins today and the Team You slate hopes to outwit the other candidates for the sought-after Associated Students of New Mexico seats. Ten student politicians will run with the Team You for ASUNM for this semester’s senate elections.

Some may lose UNMH providers

Contract renegotiations between insurance provider Presbyterian Health Plan and UNM’s Health Sciences Center have left some patients looking for a new primary care provider. PHP members who use UNMH as their primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics, can continue to see their UNMH providers until Dec. 31.

A year after legalizing recreational marijuana, Colorado voters have approved an excise tax of 15 percent on the drug, with a 10 percent sales tax that will be imposed starting next year.

Judge: Former UNM president granted access to seized property

A Bernalillo court ruled Wednesday morning that former UNM President F. Chris Garcia, who faced charges of prostitution in 2011, should be allowed access to property seized by authorities during investigations relating to the case. Second District Judicial Court Judge Stan Whitaker approved a court order after the confidential hearing that morning. The request for the order was filed by Garcia’s lawyers Robert Gorence and Andrea Harris in October.

UNM Crime Briefs

On Oct. 31, a UNMPD officer was dispatched to the Student Union Building in response to a reported battery. According to the police report, the female victim was at the southern end of the SUB when an unfamiliar man touched her “from her shoulders down her back” without her permission.

At parade, (un)Occupy decries ‘fake borders’

For members of (un)Occupy Albuquerque, the Marigold Parade is something deeper than an annual Mexican tradition. Armed with signs and fake money, (un)Occupy members marched along Isleta Boulevard on Sunday, to protest against the U.S.’s Mexican border policies as part of this year’s Día de Los Muertos celebrations.

Politics on parade for Day of the Dead

A celebration usually full of rejoice and remembrance of loved ones was riddled with politically influenced floats this weekend. Floats in this year’s Marigold Parade, which took place Sunday, included those from schools such as Del Norte High School, Erne Pyle Middle School and New Mexico International School.
